The game was going so swimmingly!

So... I got to Rannoch and had to choose between the geth and quarians after the Reaper mission.  I chose the geth, thinking that somehow I could pull out a last minute peace deal.  It didn't happen, and Tali took a back flip off the cliff.  I didn't have any other saves except for my auto and quick save games.

Not being able to go back to an earlier point, I deleted my saves and am starting over.

Good thing I choose the quarians then, I just didn't trust the geth. He was doing way too many shady things for my comfort.

Realy?  I was able to convice the quarians to stand down but after doing the mission inside the geth platform, I would have been perfectly fine with the quarians being wiped from existance.

Did you not play ME1? I think you have to in order to make peace

Yeah, as much as I love Tali, if I didn't have the option for peace, I'd side with the Geth. Mainly because of Legion and the mission in the Geth consensus.

Your bad. The Geth killed 99% of the Quarians before, and these are Reaper upgrades we are talking about.

best thing about that part for me was that it required a mix of paragon and renegade choices

like siding with Gerrel over Raan increases your chances of peace - THAT was particularly well done, you don't like the guy, but supporting him is the right thing to do.

I make peace every single time, and I always punch Gerrel in the stomach. There is a guide on the Mass Effect wiki that tells you everything you need to do. It's a matter of points. You need five points in your favor to make peace, and I believe there is a total of seven points.

you can still punch the crapbag thank gods

but you extra points or whatever for siding with him in the argument with Raan after that

something about how he needs support to advance and she's like "nah bro you got yourself into this" and he's all "but I can't retreat cuz reasons" - Shepard siding with him saves lives and get the quarians a better tactical position

It's impossible to have peace between the quarians and geth without ME2. You need both Tali and Legion's loyalties. Making sure Tali doesn't get exiled from the fleet is also a bonus.

And in ME3, you need to do the Geth fighter squadron mission, and save Admiral Koris.

The most casual of players will never succeed at it.

12 months.. has it been that long?

(this will work better in another years time, when we can quote ME2 word for word)

not to mention fairly large paragon/renegade score for both ME2 and ME3

No. Here's the factors according to the wiki:

Note: The Reputation check's requirements are complex. First, there are factors which seem to be purely pass/fail; missing even one of them flunks the Reputation check:

  • Shepard must have at least four bars of Reputation.
  • Tali and Legion must both be present, which requires an imported save from Mass Effect 2.If no save was imported, Tali will have been exiled and will not be able to support Shepard with an Admiral's authority, while Legion will not appear at all.
  • The mission Rannoch: Geth Fighter Squadrons must be completed.

Additionally, there are other factors which build up Shepard's trustworthiness to both parties; if Shepard has not done enough of them, the Commander will not have the groundswell of goodwill needed to moderate a cease-fire. According to the official Prima Games guide, eachfactor has a certain "point" value, and at least 5 "points" are necessary for the cease-fire to occur. These factors are:

  • (+2 points) Destroying the heretic geth in Legion: A House Divided. In shipboard conversation, you can ask Legion about the repercussions of your decision, and it will mention that the absence of the Heretics made the consensus to join the "Old Machines" more difficult to achieve.Geth forces are also considerably weakened without the aid of the Heretics, giving the Migrant Fleet an edge in the battle and reducing the quarians' overall casualties.
  • (+2 points) Preventing Tali's exile in Tali: Treason without presenting evidence of Admiral Rael'Zorah's experiments on the geth. While it's possible to present the evidence and still be able to broker peace, it adds its own problem in that it makes Tali far less likely to survive the attack on the Collector Base.
  • (+1 point) Brokering a peace in the Tali/Legion loyalty argument. If the player did not have sufficient Paragon/Renegade points at that time, loyalty of either Tali or Legion would have been lost. In that case -- even if loyalty had been regained later -- this "point"  will not count towards the five needed to pass the Reputation check (and broker the ceasefire).
  • (+1 point) Completing Rannoch: Admiral Koris.
  • (+1 point) Saving Admiral Koris during Rannoch: Admiral Koris.

You're doing that meme wrong. You're supposed to remove a word each time.

Wow I missed by a hair. I was able to accomplish ceasefire even though I rewrote the heretic geth in Legion: House Divided. :o
