Does anyone know if Mess Sergeant Gardner returns in any way in Mass Effect 3? And if so, how do I get him back on my ship!?

Also, what about the characters in books? Kahlee Sanders from the book but Hendel? Gillian? Most of them live to be part of the games. I presume some of them die but not all of them, right?

IKR, we understand that there's simply not enough story to tell with all of these great characters but the easiest way out would be to incorporate the lesser characters as indoctrinated minions like Morinth - that would be enough

Hendel falls over dead, and Gillian gets her throat slit by a toothbrush. After overcoming her autism. And turning 18. When she was 12 three years earlier.

Yes I heard about that strange time lapse in the last book they released. Pretty bad research on that one from the writers side...
But Racoon is right, lot of interesting characters with more personality then many in the game, yet no sight of them I n ME3.
