It could be that planet your ship landed on many years into the future as I think the moons were similar

it could be some random planet many years into the future

it could be an old man telling his son a made up story about identity and sacrifice

it could be a few other things but my money is on one of those.
for some reason this part really depresses me, I found something about it really disturbing

An unspecified amount of time in the future, where an unspecified grandparent is telling his unspecified grandkid the legend of "The Shepard" who saved the galaxy from the Reapers.

There's not much to be confused by, really.

I think the implication is that all of Mass Effect was an old man telling the story of Shepard to a kid.

What was the name of the TV series from the 80s that turned out to be entirely a dream? Cause that's what Mass Effect 3's ending seems similar to.

The soap opera Dallas had a sequence where a character death was "just a dream".  It's a pretty well-known use of the trope, if not the trope starter itself.

Don't take that conversation as having gone over everything in the game exactly as it happened. There's a lot they could never know. Remember, details were lost over time. ;)

More like, it is telling you that Shepard is a legend and that life carried on very, very far into the future. So you succeeded, sort of.
