It seems that games have changed a lot over the past 10 years. I dont just mean in terms of graphics but with the advent of the new "casual gamer" market games have been toned down a lot. It seems very rare these days that a game as infinately glorious as DA appears. So I was wondering how many people here remember some of the glorious games that seem to have disappeared and what you thought were the best amongst them.

I would have to say for myself the Undying and Arcanum have to be 2 of the best games ever made and both deserve some sort of sequel, did anyone else here play Undying and remember its awesomeness?

Has anyone got any recomendations that i may have missed back in the good old days?

If you go back far enough, the local ID that I'm using should give you a hint. The Betrayal at Krondor game was an all-time headliner, replayable almost endlessly. Might and Magic 6 also had / has that flexibility.

Space combat sim genre is almost a dead still. Very few titles come out nowadays and those that are released are only empty, hollow husks, shadows of their former glory. Such epic games as Freespace 2 &1, Wing Commander series, Star Wars: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Starlancer, Freelancer, Privateer and Independence War 2 are only but a memory.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter was a superior game to SW: X-wing, SW: X-wing vs TIE Fighter and SW: X-wing Alliance.

TimeSplitters 2. Why do shooters have to be so angsty and serious now? I want to annihilate people online, playing as a Monkey, in a Capture the Bag match where everyone gets infected with fire >.<

Wing Commander was mentioned and I have to second that series. Another old and somewhat overlooked great was Star Control 2. I played this on the 3DO years back. There was lots to explore, great music, and some of the funniest dialogue I've ever heard voiced.

Guardian Heroes on the Saturn was an excellent side scrolling beat 'em up. Not as varied and innovative as Gunstar Heroes was, but a worthy spiritual successor to it. Five selectable characters, eith different abilities to level up; and some crazy combo potential; particularly with juggling. (Fighting game style juggling, that is.) It was everything Marvel Ultimate Alliance is and in some ways more. The graphics had a vibrant, colorful appearance and its anime style served as a strength during a time when crude polygons were becoming a lot more popular than traditional artwork in games, anime style or not.

Panzer Dragoon Saga also came out on the Saturn. It was a truly amazing JRPG that received little to no recognition here and had a ridiculously small run. There are only several thousand copies of it floating around. It's usually sold at obscene prices, sadly. The game is definitely worth it if you can get your hands on it though. Combat was timer based, not unlike Final Fantasy, but played out quite differently due to the nature of the protagonists. It also told a fairly interesting, if at times admittedly bizarre story, but then many JRPG plots skew towards bizarre. :P Saga also had some truly wonderful music and even threw in the wonderful final boss theme from Panzer Dragoon Zwei when you encounter that same creature again at some point.

I'm sure i can think of others, but I'll stop there for now.

Thats the idea, great when you played them. No matter how good a game was, when you come back to most they inevitably feel a little dated. However the sheer awesomness that you felt playing them is how to rank them. For example Undying was and is an amazing game but the graphics destroy the atmosphere it once had.

I enjoyed X3 for a whole 5 minutes before I was spinning around in space wondering what the **** I was supposed to do. A game with depth is good, but when you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, it gets rather annoying trying to feel your way around in the dark.

Panzer General--a game with an actual adaptive campaign where the battles you fight start to really diverge as you get further into the game. The original elder scrolls game (imo, the best of the series).X-Com. Darklands (buggy as hell on original release, but a great RPG if you can get past the graphics and get it running in dosbox or an old computer). The first Master of Orion, very different from MOOII and with very different strategies possible. The original Pirates, imo, better than the remake in some significant ways (in particular, the possibility of actually capturing the actual treasure fleet).  Jagged Alliance II (if you like turn based tactical games).  Incubation (same).

Really back in the day - the first Castle Wolfenstein on the Apple 2+ - a little stick figure running around.  The first Wizardry game, party based rpg with very primitive 3d graphics.
