hey guys, i am near the beginning (just got the turian primarch) and i am trying to get thru as many side quests as possible before advancing. i am trying to scan in the shrike abyssal, but i have alerted the reapers of my presence. now i can't even travel there without being attacked. do i have to progress the story along or play multiplayer in that section to make it safe to scan there again?!

If you do one mission, either side or primary, then the alert will go away I believe.

The only way to get them to go away is by doing missions.
But I've found that its still possible and relatively easy to scan systems with them on your tail. This, however, only really works in clusters with various solar systems. The trick is to do fly by runs across the solar system, scanning while evading reapers, and then heading for the edge of a system. The reapers pick up speed so you cannot outrun them forever, so you have to plan your routes. As soon as you leave the system, the reaper invaders reset their position. You can fly back in, do another run, rinse and repeat. And repears dont catch up to you while you do a planet scan or pick up oil. You do start off slower though, so if reapers are too close, you'll get caught.
On that topic: Anyone else think Bioware really skimped out when reapers do catch you? Just a fade to black with a game over screen. Why not at least a video of the reapers tearing us apart! This is supposed to be a cinematic game!

Does anyone know if visiting the Citadel resets them? I could go and see for myself but I don't want to waste the fuel

Waste all the fuel you want. It gets refilled 100% every time you dock at the Citadel.
I can't give you a sure answer though, sorry.

Good question, never tried that myself.Jokee wrote...

I just use a Galaxy Map so I don't waste sensor pings.
