Maybe it's because I just never liked the Illusive Man, but to me, his death, either at the hands of Shep or by his own hands, just doesn't feel satisfying at all. I really wanted to execute him, make him suffer, etc, but instead, I'm pretty much forced to watch him take some control...

Why did that have to be so unsatisfying? I wanted a really satisfying execution.

The Illusive Man I don't think was ever meant to be the "bad guy". His idea was to protect humanity after all, but towards the end he lost his way when the reapers began to control him. His idealistic of wanting to control the reapers to stop their threat probably made the most sense, at least in my play through.

Maybe the Illusive Man is supposed to be a foil for Shepard, but in all seriousness, I wanted to execute him not because I thought he was a "bad guy", but because he had crossed my Shep enough to a point where, he and Shep had similar goal and methods, but Shep would have had executed the Illusive Man because he would need to take over the Illusive Man's resources.

For me he was Saren 2.0. Honestly I was expecting for the crucible to fire, killing off most of the reapers except somehow harbinger (who like sovereign) turns his puppet (the IM) into some weird reaper/man (akin to how saren turned into a .... frog) which would be the final fight.

I thought the same. Saren 2.0 oh how original (sarcasm).

He got close to being a great character, but putting him in the footsteps of Saren was pretty much character assassination. Should have scrapped the kid monologue and ended with a face to face on that space platform, the truth revealed, and visions competing. Would have resonated with the previous games, and all would have been well and awesome. But instead, he became the generic mutated unwitting pawn. The bin for forgettable villains.

Think that was intended, right down to his suicide.

Yeah the artbook has a picture of some weird husk like creature, and above it, it says that it's the illusive man...
I'm wondering why they switched up the ending... This one still feels very desperate, and I would have rather had that then the 'heart of the citadel' showing up..

Bit strange there wasn't really a final boss to speak of, just waves of banshees and brutes. Felt like I was playing multiplayer.

I actually enjoyed every part about TIM. He was never the "bad guy" he was always doing what HE thought was right for humanity. And his steadfast belief that he was right turned out to be his undoing as the Reapers were able to feed on his desires. And even after everything is over his decision to try and control the Reapers turned out to be a viable solution, so it makes you question whether he was truly wrong.
