Seeing how he looks like a Jersey Shore reject, I was surprised to find that I actually like this character so far.
Is he a cliche?  Maybe but so what....well acted and well written cliche.

BTW: I was going to post in the Vega thread, but for the life of me, I couldn't find it...even after a search.  I'm getting old though.

I don't know why everyone was up in arms about him just because of how he looked. Then again, I try to steer clear of anything that has to do about Jersey Shore/Kartrashians, ect. I reserved my judgement till I started playing, and BOY. I wanna do another playthrough to romance him. I really like him. He's not as hotheaded as I thought he'd be.

Yeah, he kind of grows on you over time. Actually, i think he is a pretty good character. Better than the VS, in my opinion.

Yeah, same here! I was pretty certain he would just be a benchwarmer for my entire game, but he's really fun.

He kinda seems like a character from another type of space-marine game that got lost and found himself in Mass Effect. He feels like a Gears character, or a Starcraft character. Nothing bad about that, and he's growing on me. He just feels out of place.

I like him. He's really funny and generates most of the comic relief for me in the game. He doesn't sound much like a commissioned officer though - more NCO, in my opinion.

Well James does look the part. But the key differences are: he's not shallow, not self-absorbed, not actually obnoxious (though jokes around now and then) and seems to be generally pretty hard working. He started to grow on me pretty quick from the moment he told me about the grunts at Purgatory.

He has a similar appeal to Grunt for me, though James is more mature.

James is awesome, I really loved him and he is freaking tough. I took him on my final mission because he is a badass.

James is the best. Him and my Femshep have a great bromance. I'm still pretty early in the game, but that sparring scene with him was incredibly well done.

Too bad you can't romance him. He's probably the only character who'd be able to pull me away from Garrus.

I really like him too, I liked his VA too. I don't know why but the way he says Normandy sounds pretty cool.

Surprisingly, I like him too. After Mars, I found myself taking him everywhere. My squad is normally Javik (who believe it or not, I like too) and Vega.

Javik is pretty cool, and yeah Vega is just a bundle of fun he reminds me of Grunt who I also liked.

I'm not surprised I like Vega, because there hasn't been a squadmate yet that I've disliked (save Morinth, but she hardly counts), but I'm surprised at how much I like him. He's like my Shep's kid brother.

That she flirts with way too often.

After reading the comic I was really concerned about him...I did not like him at all in the comic's portayal....but it turns out I really like him, his pretty awesome in personality (kinda screwed up but cool) and combat...... I take him and Garrus on every mission with me now....Team Win!!....

Yea, I thought his character was pretty cool. I used him in my party quite a bit. I loved his line "...I just like dinosaurs." lol

He's pretty funny, but I though they tried to push the "racial equality" thing a bit too hard with the random inclusions of Spanish from time to time. I guess they covered most every other ethnicity, so they figured they needed a lead Hispanic character, and had to make it really obvious that that's what he was supposed to be. I appreciate the attempt at equality, but though I did overall like the character, I did find that aspect of him a bit...jarring, as in it pulled me out of the game because it seemed so bizarre and unncessarily blatant. 

No other human character (that I can think of) of any race speaks in any other language or really brings up much about their origin culture, that this one does seems really out of place.

Yeah I didn't think I was gonna like him, but he grew on me. I brought him with me through most of my missions. He's a cool kid.
