I've now played through (tiny spoiler) Mars, the first round of between-mission stuff, completed the first side-mission and made landfall on a certain moon. I thought this might be a good moment to give a little review:
  • The combat is generally excellent. It's faster-paced, crunchy, and very exciting. Playing as a Vanguard, my Shepard feels very powerful, able to dominate the battlefield and do truly cool things with her powers, but also vulnerable if caught out, or after making a bad tactical decision. The new weight vs. recharge system isn't much commented-upon, but is very good: I felt rewarded when I chose to specialise around a single weapon, choose a particular tactic, and emphasise certain powers. Some of the guns do feel a bit samey, and in particular I'm not a fan with how standard pistols are now handled. Not a big deal. The cover is a bit too sensitive for my tastes, gluing me to objects when I don't always want to.
  • The plot is so far is exciting, if somewhat formulaic. It's helped a lot by long-term characterisations, solid writing, some great voice-acting and possibly the best soundtrack I've heard in a game.
  • Import: the important thing here is that my shepard's decisions came through unscathed, and the game world feels properly responsive to my decisions in the last game (in a way that ME2 sometimes wasn't). The game took a stab at upgrading my ME1 character face in the new character generator, but failed pretty badly. Took about five minutes to tweak what I was offered into something that resembled my original Shepard. So she's had a haircut - I'm relaxed about this.
  • Interactivity - while there seem to be fewer moments where I can stamp my identity on conversations, in general I'm perfectly satisfied with this aspect of the game. I play as a general renegade with a heart of gold (so - badass conversational choices, paragonesque key decisions) and everything seems to fit around this very well. The game world in general feels rich, layered, detailed and responsive.
Not sure what else to add. Does this describe anyone else's first few hours with the game?

Well, actually, the first couple hours I thought were rather bland. The game seems to take a while to get its feet under it, and a lot of the early dialogue is kinda cheesy.

And then once I got to that moon mission and the academy side mission, the game just flat-out took off and has been fantastic ever since.
