My top 10 Wish List for Mass Effect 4:
01. Customizable protagonist: I really could care less if Shepard is in this one or not, because her story is done for me after ME3. That said, I'd prefer to see the return of customizable protagonists with race and class selection. Those with ME3 imports would have the choice of certain races (no spoilers allowed so I won't say), so I'd say the default choices would include Human, Turian, Asari, Drell and Salarian. The other three are subjective.
Want Rating: MUST HAVE (I don't play premade protagonists, sorry)
02. The possibility of creating your own squad: The Baldur's Gate series allowed you the option to either party with premade NPCs or create your own party members. Naturally for those who enjoy premade NPCs will have the option to do so (romances, friendships, banter and all) and those who prefer to go old-school (create your party, fill in the blanks with your imagination) are free to do so. And there's always the third option, to mix and match custom party members and NPCs as you please. I'd like to see that option come back (though I think Dragon Age III is more likely to fill that role).
Want Rating: Would Be Nice (but definitely not mandatory)
03. Melee classes: With the inclusion of the Phantom enemy, I think Mass Effect could open up new avenues with the idea of melee classes. I'm not saying bring in lightsabers (this isn't Star Wars after all!), but possibly an Unarmed 'Monk' style class and a Melee Weapons class. It would be hard admittedly because Mass Effect is founded on the use of firearms, but I think it's doable.
Want Rating: Extra Sprinkles (not a necessity but a possibility if done right)
04. The option to play a truly neutral or evil character: Whatever happened to that since Baldur's Gate, KOTOR and Jade Empire? You HAD to stop the Blight and save Ferelden in Origins. You HAD to save the galaxy in Mass Effect. Whatever happened to the idea of going to the dark side? Of course the popular thing now is the moral ambiguity, and while that's nice, I'd like to have that option to play a truly evil (or even neutral!) character. Renegades were little more than good guys with attitude. Let's bring back the dark side (option) here! Plenty of opportunities for ME4!
Want Rating: Yes Please (not a forced want...but would improve storytelling and replayability)
05. Armor classes: The return of Light, Medium, and Heavy armor, all dependent on your classes. I really didn't like the whole 'any class can wear any armor' in Mass Effect 2, especially since party members had fixed armor since ME2. I prefer the idea of caster and agile characters forced to be quick on their feet while heavy armored powerhouses in the frontlines. Yes Mass Effect is a shooter but its also an rpg. Let's keep the rpg aspect in it!
Want Rating: Yes Please (see option 4's Want Rating for translation)
06. Party based combat: I get Mass Effect focused on Shepard while her squadmates backed her up. But for Mass Effect 4, which very likely WON'T include Shepard, I'd like to see the return of party based combat. The necessity for a Tech based character to open up those encrypted locks and hack those computers. The bonus of a Biotic based character for crowd control. In other words, make everyone useful, not just your singular character.
Want Rating: Yessss Pleeasseee (see option 5...and option 4's Want Rating)
07. Less focus on main character/non-fixed story: The Mass Effect trilogy was Shepard's show. I gather that. But for ME4, I'd rather not play a character that everyone and his or her mother depended on. I really could care less for 'chosen one' characters in stories and rpgs. Sure they're cool, but they're overdone. I'd much rather see play a character focused on his or her motivations and carving his or her story. Maybe one person is playing an Asari Justicar that's focused on bringing justice to the galaxy, but refuses to become famous or take credit because of her Lawful Good alignment. Maybe another is playing a real dirty Human Terminus mercenary that smuggles credits and works to become a crime lord. The Elder Scrolls allows for characters of different persuasions, and with the rich amount of lore and stuff in Mass Effect, I see no reason why you cannot pursue that. All those mercenary bands, cults and organizations...let's allow for some roleplaying here!
Want Rating: YES! (a definitely must...not required to buy but certainly would improve BioWare's ratings)
08. Fixed romance options: I can't use Shepard as an example here because admittedly it was her story for the trilogy. But I can use Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2 as an example (or even Skyrim). I don't really like the idea of romances being open for any race and gender. I think romance options should have established preferences. Dragon Age: Origins had gender preferences and Mass Effect had exclusively straight, bi and gay characters. But let's extend that to race and alignment preferences.
For example:
Myra- Human Adept- Available to male Humans only, must be of Neutral or Evil alignment because she's a mercenary and could care less for heroics
Ophelia- Asari Vanguard- Available to all races/genders, must be of Paragon alignment because she's a Justicar who focuses on galactic justice
Cornelia- Turian Soldier- Available to male Turians only, must be of Lawful alignment and loyal to C-Sec
Abel- Human Infiltrator- Available to female Humans and Asari, must be of Chaotic alignment since he's a rebel free spirit
Want Rating: Yes please
09. NO retcons: Decisions made in Mass Effect 3 should be binding. No 'I got better' characters. If someone died they are either not there or there is a replacement. If a race got annihilated, they should not resurface. And yes, it should affect the universe as well as the possibility of certain party members being available and unavailable, as well as whether or not a race or faction is hostile or friendly. And for the newly introduced to the universe players, play a Dragon Age 2 move and have pre-built imports to help them out. Or an interactive comic.
Want Rating: MUST! (if you want to acknowledge the fanbse anyways)
10. classes affect your character: Shepard had the option to be one of six classes but ultimately she was considered a soldier. Even if she was a lightly armored adept she was treated as a guns-blazing, no holds barred soldier. Even if he was a tech genius that summoned drones and turrets he was treated as a guns-blazing, no holds barred soldier. Let's see one's class have an affect. Engineers should be known for their tech genius. Specializations such as the Medic should come into play, such as a dialogue option to heal someone. Let's see Tech and Biotic characters get the recognition they deserve.
Want Rating: Would be nice!
