Am running Vanguard Nova charge build on Insanity run. Despite a gallery of guns at your diposal I don't really feel the need to buy any upgrades in particular.

I'm about half way through the game and I think Specter weapons(Paladin, Wraith) are terribly expensive and aren't that much better from weapons you can pick up. Scimitar is my overall best shotgun at the moment and I haven't even upgraded it yet. Heavy shotgun feels terribly useless.

Waiting to see how's the Geth shotgun perform.

What's your favourite guns?  Which do you think work best for your Vanguard?

The spectre shotgun is good because it's really, really lightweight and still does pretty good damage per shot.

I like the Scmitar and Vindicator AR. I am still trying to find the Tempest. Then I will use that as well. Why does no one ever answer to busy playing the game?

Believe it or not, Chakram Launcher.

I spec Squad Cryo Ammo. Charkam launcher has charged shots to pierce through Guardian Shields, and shots that freeze targets seem to get more bonus damage on the detonation of the disks when frozen.

I've no problems at all at close range thanks to my power build, (Upgraded to level 5 is giving me 200% Cooldown.) And it gives me incredible firepower and utility at all ranges.

Interesting, I like the Chakram but I also love The Mattock. They did a good job making it really difficult to choose a weapon this time around. What do you other Vanguards use?

Has anyone tried out Evi Shotgun at all? I have been using Scmitar.

Graal Spike thrower.

I was in love with it on Tuchanka and never changed.

I should note that I played on Veteran not insanity or hardcore.

I think I am going to have to go with Particle Rifle and maybe Scmitar? Not sure on other gun yet. I might even go sans shotgun and just use Particle Rifle-Tempest.

So far, Graal Spike thrower. I gives me that one shot one kill im looking for, its rate of fire is decent for a shot gun, and its very accurate.

Have to get use too the delay, but once u do it can be a very deadly shotgun in the hands of a Vanguard. The delay is less of a problem point blank.

Graal Spike thrower, definitely. It has a ton of range, can fire really fast, and can even be charged up. In ME2 I loved the EVI but... in this game it has a really huge delay between shots.

I played around with most of the shotguns, and the Eviscerator always came out on top for me the best as a solid workhorse shotgun. After upgrades the weight, power, and accuracy all felt like they were right in the sweet spot for me.

Something I really enjoyed on my run (complete SP run finished late last night) was going with only 2 weapons for most of the game - one being my shotgun, and the other being a light, reliable sniper rifle (the N7 Valiant). As an aggressive charge / nova vanguard, my fighting ranges were almost always point-blank, with a little time spent at long range while I analyze the situation and plan my charge-in. A sniper rifle was a great weapon to use during those long range moments, then I'd switch to the shotgun and plow in headfirst.

Toward the end of the game, I played around with adding an SMG (with lighter materials) or heavy pistol (one of the lighter models) to my kit so that I would be able to get a little more sustained / accurate shooting in my close-range play. I found the Phalanx to be a great all-around solid weapon for this kind of work (piercing + extended barrel), though I think the Eagle, or Predator would fill a similar role very well. I didn't give the Carnifex / Paladin a shot for this kind of play because I was looking for a better firing rate, but they may be good options as well.

By the very end of the game, I'd actually given up the shotgun entirely, and stuck with my trusty Valiant and Phalanx, which had a combined weight low enough to allow for ~150% CD bonus (both guns at L5). The cooldown factor always felt critical to me for the close-in hyper-aggression style of charge / nova play, and I'd be very leery of going much below 80% bonus.
