Total newbie here on ME with PS3.  I'd like to know from someone whether it is advisable, or worth my while to get ME2, play through and then transfer Shepherd to ME3.  I've read a lot of the ME Codex, and have a general understanding of what has happened before, but I want to know whether my overall ME experience would be greatly enhanced by going back now or later to ME2?  Any feedback is appreciated.

Definitely.

The game is about more than plot. It's important to understand the characters in it too - more so than more most games.

The first two games are great and totally worth playing.

And the default plot flags if you start ME3 from scratch are rubbish...

Definately agree.ME1 is so engrossing.Sure its not without its glicthes, but its a top class game with an excellent story. The ending is epic.
ME2 improves in every single way. Its without doubt the best game ive ever played. It has excellent characters, a rich story and expands on the ME universe. I found it vastley superior to ME1, which is kinda crazy, considering how enjoyable it was.
The characters have more depth with some fantastic moments, and missions which mirror parts of some great sci fi movies in their own right. The ending of ME2 gave me goose bumps. Ive never seen anything like it.

As for ME3? Well I guess I'll begin finding out tomorrow, but based on the first 2, its going to link the whole story up in an epic conclusion, one which would only truley give a "proper" satisfaction if you had played the first 2 ;)

enjoy!

Your problem is no ME1 for PS3. You can get it for PC pretty cheaply via Steam but from the sounds of things you'd be unable to export the saved game in such a way as to import it for ME2 and 3 on your console. In your shoes I'd perhaps be thinking of a PC ME1 playthrough and then getting ME: Genesis to replicate the most important decisions so as to create an importable save for ME2 on your console, but I have to say that one of the things I'm enjoying about ME2 (nearing the end of my first playthrough now) is how some really very minor decisions from side quests in the first game crop up again. They're unimportant to the overall plot so Genesis doesn't (or so I believe) deal with them at all, but if you feel that's something you'd be missing it might be better to carry on with PC if that's how you start. There's also the obvious point that getting a PC ME1 for the full game experience plus Genesis just to create a similar save to begin a PS3 ME2 will cost extra. No ideal solution for Playstation owners unfortunately, but I'd say it's worth a full play of ME1 for reasons others have already given.

Thanks to all for the replies. Makes for some tough decisions, especially with a PS3 console. So for now, my only viable alternative is for ME2, with hopefully some guidance from Genesis. Downloaded ME2 last night, looking for Genesis as I didn't see it in the extras portion of the main menu. Hopefully, at some point in the future, EA will be able to recreate a full Trilogy for PS3.

Though ME for PC is intriguing, I can't see me playing it on a low res small screen, but I will have to keep that option open as well.

Thanks again,

In my opinion, ME2 for PS3 has enough backround information that playing through the first ME is not necessary. The interactive comic that tells all the events of ME and allows you to make the big choices is good enough. Sure playing the game itself would be better, but you can't transfer the save from PC to PS3 anyway, so it won't affect anything in the game. You will have a better understanding of the events and know the characters better from the start if you play it but I never thought while playing ME2 that I am missing anything even though I never played the first one.

I guess it all depends how easily you can get attached to the characters. For me, the interactive comic was enough to create a deeper bond with characters of the first game than with the new characters. For example, when I met Garrus. Even though it was actually the first time I had met him, the history I knew they shared made me all giddy. I didn't need to know the details of their history, just the knowledge that they shared one was enough.

Def play from the beginning, for your case though it looks like from ME2. The small cameos and the way that Bioware has linked everything together has been extremely enjoyable to experience over the past couple of days. I can't wait to uncover more of my past encounters and results!

Buy both (will cost you about $40 together) and enjoy about 60 hours of gameplay. If you play leisurely, it may last you until the price of ME3 drops a bit. The story is well worth it. Also, make sure you get "The Arrival" and "The Shadow Broker" DLC or some of the story won't make sense. I completely disagree with this business practice, but if you want the whole story, you need it.

Also, if you're on PC, make sure you look up all the config file mods so your mouse don't feel like total crap. ME3 fixed it (mostly), but the other two are horrendous in that regard.

Thanks, I've got all the DLC including Shadow Broker and The Arrival as well as the various appearance and equipment packs. Saw that Genesis should pop up on start up of ME2, and saw pretty much what I expect to see and the decisions I have to make there. Looking forward to a great experience.

Ah, well, of course it does depend on what you've got in the PC department. I'd say HD monitors in the 22" area are as good as an 36" HD TV that you naturally sit much further away from, but not everyone would want to spend the money upgrading their monitor for a game. Besides, I know more than one person these days who doesn't have a stand alone PC and just uses a laptop, and they certainly wouldn't want to get a monitor.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a PS3 version of the first part. I did some looking on the web before I bought and the feeling seemed to be that because ME was an XBox exclusive and Microsoft would have a contract to that effect there's probably Buckley's chance of it happening. Ever. It's one reason I bought it on PC (another was that Steam discounted ME and ME2 down to about ten bucks each around Christmas). Seems like Genesis is as close as you'll get, though there's also the consolation of having some DLC included in ME2.

Hope you enjoy it either way. I'm nearly finished my first playthrough of ME2 and I'm already looking forward to a replay.
