Also killing rats is so 1999....

well honestly the killing of the rats WAS meant as a joke...hence your buddy's (can't think of his name right now...damnit) comment on the matter.

or in other words it's a throwback to Baldur's Gate 1 where you went into the dwarves shop to kill the rats.

it wasn't meant to be serious

I know it was a joke.

I laughed.

Dwarven commoner was good, but hard to suspend the belief. Dwarven Noble was the biggest cliche, but was otherwise very fun to play. A dwarven threesome is an origional thought. But would have prefered it with cousin love in City Elf :D ( need twisted smiley )

Hey, as a male Dwarven Commoner, you can imply incestuous lust for Rica while talking with Leske. :P

*Sigh* I can see why so many people dislike the Dalish Elf origin, but I actually like it. Mage origin is what I'd have to call the weakest, if mainly because of the excruciatingly slow pace.

I liked it too, although it was not my favourite. The dwarf noble one was great... That's my favourite. The worst? That one is hard, I think all of them were good. However, the mage one might've been a bit weak, to be honest. So many people treats you like a stranger when you've lived in the tower since you were a kid.

*blinks* The Dalish origin was one of my favorites. Especially how its integrated into the game...

I thought the weakest was actually the human noble...T__T It was incredibly short and not very interesting to me...Then again, I've never liked humans much...

I haven't played all the origins yet, but I think they all are pretty equal on strong points and weak points.

For example, human noble starts off slow and rather predictably - talk with your mum and dad, flirt with visiting nobles, kill rats in the kitchen. But the ending was action-packed and emotional, even though I had feared it would be totally cliche. By contrast, the mage origin starts off strongly but starts to drag towards the end. I really never connect with Jowan like I did with the Couslands, but I help him because, well, my mage is kinda evil.

Haven't played the Dalish Elf origin yet.

Having played them all through to Ostagar and only finished it with the City Elf...

Favorite: Dwarf Noble as a Female (Very very very close second is City Elf)

Worst: Daelish Elf.

Dalish Elf is definetly the worst. I thought Mage was pretty crappy too though. The Harrowing was neat but after that it turned into Jowan's story rather than mine. Add to that if you work with Irving there is zero reason for you to leave and join the Grey Wardens, and even though Irving continually states you were working with him, The Templar Commander uses the exact same angry dialogue as if you weren't.

If they wanted to railroad you in such a manner they may as well take away the opportunity to work with Irving at all.

Agreed, City Elf, especially as a female PC, is quite moving, never before i've been so eager to kill someone.

While Dalish Elf origin gives the best reason to join the Grey Wardens, the quest is pretty boring.

I never tried City Elf female yet, but I totally agree about the eagerness to kill! GRRR! That origin got me worked up!

I'm yet to check out the dwarves.

City Elf (Male) is my favorite so far.

"I just wanted you to be awake for this" and "I... uh... oh sod it (attack)" have been the best dialogue options I've gotten throughout the game, it's too bad they're both in the prologue.

Haven't tried them all but Human Noble, while a little bland and cliche, did make a certain showdown later in the game a lot more intense.

QFT.

Also, I found the City Elf origin to be much more moving when played by a male. Must be my "shiny knight helping the damsel in distress" syndrom... apart from the fact that the shiny knight wasn't so shiny by the end of the prologue Posted Image

This Origin had it all: comedy, tragedy, action-packed, gives real choices (as far as prologues go) and, well, Shanni.

I haven't played city elf and dwarven commoner, and have zero interest in those. The other four, I'd rank human noble > dwarven noble > Dalish elf > mage. The human noble was reallly engaging and perfect for my character and my own tastes -- touching in the first half, gut-wrenching in the second. I've rarely felt so attached to NPCs as in that origin. Gorim from the dwarven noble origin comes very close, too. I like those NPCs better than most "real" party members.

After winning the game once as mage, I started playing all origins to see what they are about and figure out which origin I like best to play through 2nd time. I did like all origin stories, but some more than others. Hard to rank them, but I try including my review:

(I try to keep this completely spoilerless, but if you haven't played it I can't guarantee to not reveal a tiny bit beyond character generator description about them.)

Mage as human male: Great introduction into the game, made magic unique and provides early contact with controversy between mages and Chantry, much world lore with the Fade, fun watching teachers and students, alternative ways to solve the quests, riddles to solve, many ideas, great immersion. Especially the alternative ways to solve the quests make this outstanding for me.

Dwarf Noble played as male warrior: Cool introduction into dwarf politics. Actually makes me glad, my mage supported House H. regardless of epilogue. Can't say much more without reavealing the story, except that I liked it a lot with its intrigues. Deep immersion into gameplay with family story, story twists, but fairly linear.

City Elf played as female rogue: Just reading the hint on the origin made me think female is more interesting view, I guess I was right. Starts a little bit slow, but then picks up speed and the fights "feel" more intense being emotionally strongly involved. Good background to play a "hate humans" attitude. Vengeance was never sweeter. Seems very linear though.

Dwarf commonor played as female rogue: Starts a bit slow, but gains momentum with small twist at second assignment. Feels cool to show the establishment what a casteless rogue can do... and a way out of this cesspit of Dust Town in the end.

Human Noble played a male warrior: Nice introduction into human politics with already knowing more about Howe in late game than other origins. Vengeance has to wait though, but I'll surely enjoy meeting him again... Family tragedy at it's best with a few side plots. Most humorous parts compared to others. Fairly linear.

Dalish Elf played as male rogue: Well, I generally like elves and the beginning was promising. Some fights ahead with hints about mysteries of the past. A little elf lore is revealed through storyteller later even. Actually a bit too short compared to the other origins for my taste. Perhaps the origin most compelling to join the Grey Wardens, but then again the most desperate motivation. Very linear and straight-forward. At some points I felt there was potential to build up more suspense with e.g. my other party-member picking up on earlier findings to make the mysteries more foreboding. Unsure how this origin contributes much to plot after origin.

All in all I would have enjoyed even a little bit longer origin stories, but they do give the player a good sense of uinique background and are so much better than reading a story text. Perhaps the most innovative feature of the game.

P.S.: I am surprised quite a few didn't like the mage origin as much. Just wanted to add this.

Best: City Elf

Worst: Dalish Elf and Human Mage, neither of which has any meaningful conflict.

Most Humorous: Male City Elf when the toolset bug made the game think my character was female.

I haven't tried the mage origin with an elf, is it any different?

No.  There aren't any noticeable differences as far as I could tell.

Dwarven and Human Noble were just plain terrible because of how predictable they were, despite the nice scenery. Mage and Dalish Elf were in the "okish" range. City Elf I really enjoyed, but I only ever tried it as a male. I suppose your gender affects that story quite profusely? Need to try a female one too. I've also yet to try Dwarven Commoner. So far, I'd put Dwarven Noble at rock bottom and City Elf on top.

Didn't realize my list would be so different. I really liked the Dalish background and found the city elf start to be pretty lackluster.

1. Dalish Elf

2. Dwarf Commoner

3. Human Noble

4. Mage

5. Dwarf Noble

6. City Elf

May I ask why you think dwarfen noble was so predictable to you? Well, perhaps if you had a playthough first with another origin, because then you'd know some things in advance. Other than that the dwarfen noble origin is among the best in my opinion.

the human noble one is good because your character wants to kill Arl Howe and you eventually do. i don't like the mage one because either way you get somewhat in trouble the dwarf noble is cool to how you can make your brother not king its funny
