I can't seem to figure out what role EDI plays in combat. I mean if it's just tech then Tali might be a better choice.
EDI's unique skills don't seem to work out very well for me either. When I tell her to place a decoy she usually places it in some nearby isolated spot away from enemies. Defense matrix shoots her recharge time pretty high also.

I can't tell if she's supposed to be a power user or something else. Anyone figure any viable builds or strategies yet? All I've got is tech bursts.

I skipped defence matrix entirely - Decoy seems to be useful enough in providing distractions.

She's more than just Tech, she's crowd control. Chain Overload and Decoy alone make her good enough to keep enemies tripping over themselves to work on the right target. Neural shock helps keep it up with Organics.

Her usefulness really varies on what kind class/player you are.

Honestly, my companions don't matter all that much to me a Vanguard - the class is just so powerful.

Have you gotten her to place the decoy somewhere that actually helps to distract them? I mean the damage upgrades haven't helped at all since the decoy is never anywhere near the enemies.

Three step process to guarentee it.

1. Move her towards a choke point.
2. Command decoy by that choke point.
3. Move her back.

I can't really do it effectively without pausing, as Vanguard tends to get me moving quick and I tend to forget to use ally powers as opposed to just shouting "Cover me!" at the screen. (Yes, I got Kinect for this, it actually adds a bit of fun to all this.)

But I don't deny that Chain Overload is her most effective ability. Decoy is nice to make her command when phantoms or other close range things get to her.

Why couldn't EDI of picked a YIMIR Mec to inhabit?

That is EXACTLY what some of us thought upon seeing the pics.

EDI is more or less a cross between Engineer and Sentinel. She can be made into either. She's good for breaking defenses and can CC organics.

Garrus > EDI
Tali > EDI

Sorry, but she didn't have enough to justify me bringing her, and hated when I HAD to take her to the Cerberus base.

Decoy is not even close to good as a drone. Which I've noticed most of the time enemies do not ignore a drone, while a decoy I noticed half the time the enemies ignore. Mind you I beat the game on Insanity, and just like in ME2, drone is amazing.

I LOVED EDI and Decoy is certainly more useful when she uses it. It always seems to spawn in front of Shepard and that's helpful in drawing enemy fire. Skip Defense Matrix and max Overload and Incinerate and you're looking at probably the best squad mate.

See I have a different experience, she's always been putting the Decoy in front of or around me to distract incoming fire. I found her to be quite the interesting and neat companion.

Note, as a Vanguard:

Chain Overload - Neural Shock - Chain Overload.

Then for Garrus I went Chain Overload - Cooldown - Chain Overload

Top this off with me having Cryo Ammo upgrade which is as follows:

Squad Ammo, Ammo Capacity, Freeze Chance.

Between these abilities, I have ample field control as a Vanguard. Enemies get staggered by Nova, stunned in waves by overload and slowed/frozen by gunfire. The freezing also leaves foes vulnerable to a Shatter specked concussion shot and for Cryo Blasts from EDI's incinerate.

For Biotic Detonations I'm thinking of getting Stasis as a bonus power - I'm currently using Lift Shockwave, but find that I rarely use it due to the sheer power of the combos I already have in place.

And this is just for EDI/Garrus. There are plenty of other squad combinations out there for Vanguard. But I find that building your team for blanket crowd control works best - as it gives the Vanguards the option of charging in more recklessly and inflicting hefty power damage, or standing back to focus weapon fire on the more dangerous targets (Atlas, Banshees).

I'll put it this way - I've never had to flank anything.

EDI having a body was just a fan-service to say the least. Past that, I had the same issue with her. She should have had more "tech-sabotaging" capabilities, basically she should have been the anti-synthetic. Her "clone" was pointless too. She was constantly putting it right in front of me, which was not only distracting, but it wasn't exactly "shielding me" because the AI in the game made the clone duck every time I aimed my gun! D:< (friendly shots should have gone through the clone, but blocked enemy fire imo)
In the end, again, nothing but a fan-service.
You want a tech? Take Tali.

For me, EDI is one of the two most useful companions. Her Decoy saved my life many times and seems to attract phantoms, and both inc and overload are incredibly useful.
I prefer CC companions, such as Javik and EDI, who can be used as setup for explosions and save my vanguard arse anyways

My Shep is a soldier.

In ME1 I always balanced this out with Tali and Liara. In ME2 I took Miranda and Mordin everywhere, since their combined talents meant that armour and shields were simple to break through. In ME3 I tend to take Liara and EDI since between them they have most of the abilities that Mordin and Miranda together offered. Also singularity, a talent I missed in ME2 apart from in Lair of the Shadobroker.

As a side note, Tali was much more useful in ME1 when almost all of my adversaries were geth, and fully levelled up AI Hacking ensnared many a geth jugganaught for quite a length of time. *nostalgia*

EDI's pretty good vs. Cerberus IMO.

I bring EDI (or Garrus) on Cerberus missions. Not both, though.
