Why play as anything other than mage?

When my mage can tank, heal, and do 96% of the DPS of my group of 4 (all at the same time) then why should I play as anything other than a mage?
I tried playing as a Dalish archer yesterday. At level 8 with 25 DEX, 20 STR and some cunning, if my arrows ever hit the target, which most of the time they didn't, they were doing around 10-12 damage. Alistair was constantly dying because he sucks at the role the game forces you to have him in, Leliana was doing even worse DPS than I was with 2 enchanted daggers, but Morrigan was the one holding it all together. Without her the group I had wouldn't even be able to kill mediocre groups of enemies.
So, when a mage can fulfil every role of every other character, DPS, tank and heal, all at the same time, why should I ever play as anything other than a mage? I don't even need a rogue in my group to unlock chests because I simply don't need what's inside them. My group are all wearing the clothes they started the game with, except Alistair who has heavy armour on, including my mage who is still wearing the +1 willpower robe, and I'm doing 96% of group damage, tanking, and healing, and none of my group have ever died.

Becuase you want to play a character that hates or fears mages?
Because you like rogues or warriors?
Or just becuase you can...

In my two playthroughs I have played Mage and Rogue and so far Rogue is way way way more fun than Mage. Sure the mage could AE the **** out of anything that came near it and I really like the entropy line of spells which doesn't seem to get much credit overall but something about sneaking up behind a group of enemies and absolutely decimating them as a rogue before the rest of your group even catch up to you is just top for me.

Anytime you have a class that always hits, that is going to be OP. And there is a reason why mages are always my number one target.

And yes, it also matters how you want to roleplay this. Playing a rogue or warrior can actually be fun too.

I love barbarians, light leather armour, preferably bear or wolfskin, long beard, dual axes, long hair, basically a Viking Berserk, not giving a crap about their own safety as long as they can hurt and kill their foe in a barbaric rage.
Mages simply dont come close to that personality.
Being brutal without remorse, emerging from the mist to eviscerate anyone who stands against you.

This isn't a rant or a complaint, it's just a question.

Sounds to me like you have a case of the exaggerations. Regardless, you are hiding your game profile by not linking it, so we can't verify what you are actually doing versus what you're claiming.

Having said that, I understand your point. DAO's class system is far from perfect and there are too many asymetry between classes.
For example, stats. A mage only needs 2 stats. A warrior 4 stats, maybe five if we include magic for potions and health.
Even in the books that gives free talentes there are asymmetry. The talents book could be spent even for spells but that's not true for spell books (correct me if I'm wrong).
Even in BG II (so AD&D) Mages were really overpowered but at the greatest levels a group could not make it without a warrior, a rogue and a cleric to support the mages.
I know that DA:O is a single player game so it's not a problem of balance. The balance is between your party and the darkspawn... but a system where there is potentially no need at all of a class (rogues) and where another class is there only to distract enemies while the mages nuke 'em, it's not my kind of game system.

Balance issues are moot for a singleplayer game where all the playable characters are under your control.
