We just sent a gigantic fleet from all over the galaxy through one relay, and it still can't handle sending out a wave of energy that destroys the Reapers? ...Really? C'mon!

This is also why Citadel blew up after Crucible fired. Also, after seeing Citadel orbit earth, one would think Citadel would be much larger than they show, even closed.

You'd think after generations, they'd find a workaround. The whole galaxy is lost to that. The whole franchise rests on the fact that they can travel the universe, via the mass effect.

... I already explained this.
Technological devices work when fulfilling their operations, they do not work when fulfilling operations clearly out of their scope and which take all of their power and potentially overload them.
The energy stopped the containment rings from spinning, either by overload or design, this caused their controlled detonation instead of an overload ala Arrival.
The GALAXY is not screwed in a long term basis, and in a relatively mid-term it can rebuild and not have to worry about Reapers coming to kill them all.
