The Catalyst is Mass Effect's version of God.
The Reaper Invasion is Mass Effect's version of The Flood (Noah's Ark)
Harbinger says in the Arrival DLC that we fight against inevitability, dust fighting against cosmic winds. He's right, no matter what, the Reaper Invasion happens, and the mass relays are destroyed and the slate is wiped clean. Just like the flood did in the Bible.
The Catalyst basically says, that he could not see any other way but to wipe out organic life because they wouldn't cooperate, obey, love, abstain, etc. etc.
As far as the three endings are concerned, as an american taxpayer you can attend Town Hall meetings and ask the President of the United States questions. The answer you get is random, but you can get in contact with the most powerful person in the world.
Yet as a gamer, you cannot get in contact with Casey Hudson or the Dev team and you cannot ask questions about the game you just paid $80 for.
Anyway, the three endings were great on paper. They even sound great, until you choose one, then the way BioWare deploys your choice is just down right depressing, honest to God I choose the control reapers ending and all that happened was Shepard became the Illusive man all the way and the normandy door started to open. Whoop tee freakin doo.
