Would have posted this in one of the other forums, but this is the only one I seem to have a POST NEW THREAD option to...
I just finished the fight in the Pearl... and am now literally and utterly stuck.... Everywhere I have went, I just get thoroughly overwhelmed... Massive amounts of npcs and immediate death at every option.... I have tried every map option, and world map option, and in most cases, even the roadsise encounters just crush me... I have tried a multitude of tactics options, etc.... Is there something I am missing? The barrage of inevitable defeats is really starting to turn me off on the game... I like a challenge, to be sure, but to have every option just crush me is ruining the game.... Anyone have any tips on what I might be doing wrong?
Stuck?

Turn down the difficulty for that one fight and then turn it back up again.
Some of those random encounters can be brutal early on. But each one only occurs once.

To Sloth - Ahhh thanks for the info on being able to post...
To Serenity - Is that really the only solution? I was kinda hoping I was missing something versus the game forcing a reduced difficulty. I could understand this if I was playing on hard, but on Normal difficulty, seems turning difficulty down is a 'cheesy" way of getting around a problem.

I know what you mean Aspect. I am now at lvl15 and tried some encoutners based in Denerim and man they can be tough. One of the tactics I have learned, that help a lot, is to ensure you have some ranged members and some agressive. Also, having all members attack one specific target first really helps in terms of taking down an enemy quickly, usually starting with the lower level enemies. This game is definitely a learning curve for people like me coming from the FPS world.

Depends on the encounter. They are different. Depends on your party composition. I scraped my way through one with just Morrigan using Cone of Cold. That always helps. Blizzard too.
In general, try to stay at a distance and whittle away at their health with ranged weapons. Try to pull single enemies away from the group. Engaging them full on generally won't work.
In the Denerim street encounters you can usually find some spot to hide away from the archers. Then pull them bit by bit.
The thing is that the whole game isn't like that. Some of the random encounters and Denerim backalleys are among the hardest fights in the game considering the level you are on and that you can hardly avoid them. It took me to the end of the Deep Roads to find a really, really challenging battle again.
