Liara didn't even offer to do this in my last playthrough, and I talked to her more then than I ever have in a playthrough. Do you have to meet certain conditions?

I refused it.

All the other times I just walk by her.

Despite my vocal hatred for Liara I usually accept the gift. I hate Liara for meta reasons, my canon Shepard doesn't hate her.

I was thinking "Vulcan mind meld" ala Star Trek II myself.

Would not be surprised if they use it to bring Shepard back when Shep'less ME4 doesn't sell very well.

I didn't take the gift. I have more important things to worry about that than her stupid 'moment'.

Wat. I didn't get an offer or anything. I just said "Give em hell, Liara." and the conversation was over. I was confused becuase she's always offered it before.

Having just finished another playthrough with all the single-player DLC to date, I could swear that her dialogue for this scene changed. She explains what she's about to do and what it means and I am 99.9% positive that she's not said that before.

She always explained it, but you had to choose the dialogue option that asks what kind of gift it is. If you choose the 'of course' dialogue option there isn't any explanation.

She joined minds with Shepard several times in ME1. I don't see any little blue children from that.

This.

Melding isn't always sexual, though both Liara's detractors and her fans are occasionally guilty of pretending that it is for different reasons.

Whether romanced or not the parting gift isn't sexual, and no blue babies were created. Of course if someone wants to head canon that Liara got pregnant, that is all well and good so long as they acknowledge that it is their personal head canon. That quite obviously wasn't the writers' intent with that scene.

The non-LI gift isn't romantic either. Its just a profound expression of friendship and loyalty.

Well, given the love scene from ME1, I figure even Asari sex required a bit more nudity then we see here.

Beyond that....man, you guys, ruining a beautiful scene. The romance version is obvious, but the non-romance? It's way too easy to forget that despite how capable she is, Liara is the Asari equivalent of a 20 year old. She's a very close parallel with Tali there. Like Tali, she's a young adult just really getting started with her life, and then along comes Shep. "What could I possibly be suggesting? I mean, a young woman gets rescued by a dashing commander who lets her join his crew and then goes off to save the galaxy? How could she possibly develop any kind of interest in him?"

Consider it from her perspective. By the end of Mass Effect 1, Shep is basically Captain Amazing. By this game, he's friggin' superman. She's been clearly enamored with him since the time they met. She's journeyed with him, protected him, fought beside him. She's sacrificed another man who was interested in her for slim chance at bringing Shepard back from the dead, spent her time and resources protecting Earth while neglecting her own home world. Then she sets up beacons throughout the galaxy, to tell future species about the cycle and warn them about the reapers. What does she think is the most important thing to tell them about? Yep, Shepard. In such detail that he possible becomes a legendary figure in the mythology of the species in the next cycle. And Shep....well, just goes back to shooting things.

She quite literally wrote his name in the starts with such passion that races who hadn't evolved yet knew his name. Some girls give hints to their feelings with subtlety. Liara couldn't be less subtle about her feeling if she wrote "I love you Shephard!" in 80 foot letters with a Cain to a soundtrack by Dire Straits.

So either Shep is air-quotes level oblivious, or .....Yeah, the dashing space captain savior of the galaxy has the girl friend-zoned. She's been trying with everything she's got for years, doing the impossible, and still the best she ever gets out of him is "You're a good friend Liara."

And there they are, almost certainly about to die, last chance there is going to be. And even then, all the girl can do is give him one last gift - a brief moment of peace in the face of Armageddon.

....and you guys want to turn it into a rape scene. What is wrong with you?

See, that's the summation of everything about Liara's romance I dislike - she falls in love wth the myth of Commander Shepard more than Commander Shepard the person. She becomes Shepard's personal cheerleader, incapable of seeing any of Shepard's flaws, and, more troubling, raises Shepard above her. She does not seem to consider herself Shepard's equal because, like the protheans, she put Shepard on a pedestal. Unlike the protheans, however, there's no occasion where Shepard gets knocked off that pedestal and brought down to Earth for her. Even after Thessia, she doesn't blame Shepard for failing to recover the data. She blames herself.

But that summation is also the reason why I never accept that gift - the mind-meld is way too intimate an act from where I'm standing, and, given that asari mate through joining consciousnesses, I recognize that agreeing to do it is sending her mixed messages, particularly given that I'm using coming from having just made out with Kaidan.

Those were different circumstances back in ME1, when Liara hardly knew Shepard (minus the love scene). In ME3, she may have extra incentive to copy/map his neurology in the very likely event Shepard's going to die within the next couple of hours.

I thought that scene with Liara her best in the series. If she had not being so useless and so annoying I would have actually enjoyed it.

Count me as one of those that DID NOT get it. Still don't know what memory it is supposed to be but it made more sense when Liara was Shep's lover.

I think it was her second best scene in the series.

I think the 'Name in the Stars' scene was her best. But that's just my opinion, no need to go spreading it around.

I think Shepard was seeing some of her memories, but we (the players) weren't. I think the snowflake-like balls of light that they both were looking at were supposed to be her memories. It made sense to them, but not to the spectators. Had Mass Effect been a movie there probably would have been flashback scenes, but for a game it would be hard to pull off without creating new enviroments and character models.

I think that the "I pushed random button and now I`m stuck" was the best scene of her.. Hall Of Fame worthy scenes are with the legion =]

Name in the stars was really good for liara though I'm not really a huge liara fan. Though it was nice to see her character evolve from geeky and awkward to a capable warrior and shadowbroker. ME2 was a nice arch for her.

I wonder that scene was supposed to be what embracing eternity was like? It did have an eternal sort of feel to it if I was going to categorize it in some way. But I rather preferred the conversations with my squad over that bit. To be honest, all of them were quite good compared to hers.

That moment in the game ... was very warm and compassionate, I did the friendship version where she loops her arm around yours and gently rest her head on your shoulder.. I wish it was a longer cutscene.. I wish there was a option for Shep to say.. Can we stay here alittle longer?

Yes!

I like that interpretation. I wonder if he scene was also supposed to be symbolic of the Asari phrase "Embrace Eternity"?

Great scene.

Not sure how anyone could be anti-Liara after this, and many other moments throughout the trilogy.

Yeah, I get that she's kind of "forced" on players at times but ... still. She's all heart and she's so sweet.

You want some fun dialog? Complete monastery mission and kill Falere, Liara`s reaction is ridicilous if you romance her.. Her voice tune is same as humiliated dog (I replayed the mission, couldn`t stand it).

EDIT:
I know the voices aren`t real, but man, do they ever come up with some great ideas. I`ll be back soon!

So... Did Liara basically rape Shepard?

Because that would be super.

Liara was my LI so its interesting that she does it for everyone, but yes, I'm pretty sure that was a bonding to make a child. At least I'd like to believe that.

It's my headcannon as well and is the reason I'll never take her on the final run. She needs to survive so the little blue babies survive.
