Can't save the game

Picked up my copy yesterday (Aus release), installed this morning, played happily for a couple of hours, only to find that the game hadn't saved any of my progress. There had been no autosaves; F5 did nothing; and a manual save didn't do anything either.

I've tried:
- Re-installing the game
- Running with DLC, without DLC
- Running the game from a different Windows profile (hey, it worked for some other games)
- Activating and deactivating cloud services in Origin
- Acting and deactivating autosave
- Starting a new game using an ME2 save, and starting an entirely new game (<- ETA)

I eventually hit upon gamersettings.ini, in the Config folder, and found this:
[SaveGames]
Location=

The save location was blank, so (using the ME2 .ini as a guide) I put in the folder I wanted to use:
[SaveGames]
Location=E:\\[Username]\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 3\\Save

Now when I try to save the game, the little "Game Saving/Saved" icon shows up in the bottom left, and the game acts is if it has been saved. But when I open the save folder, there's nothing there (just my gamer profile with graphics settings, etc.), and when I click Load from the main menu, there are no save files present.

Needless to say, this is unbearably, monstrously, imponderably frustrating. Has anyone else hit upon this issue?

For the record, I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, the game's installed on a non-boot drive, ME1 and 2 run fine, Origin runs fine, etc.

Even if someone could provide me an example of the save path their install of ME3 uses, as a guide, or if someone could provide an example of that "Location=" line so I know I'm not doing something terribly wrong, it might be of use. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

My save location in gamersettings.ini is blank as well, but my games are saved. The location where my games are saved seems to be generated though, since it looks like this:
C:\\Users\\{username}\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 3\\Save\\{shepardname}_32_Infiltrator_020311_2a35b18\\

The save files carry the .pcsav extension.

Hi,

this also happened frequently with ME2 if you installed the game on a different partition than the one containing your "My Documents" folder. There is a quick fix for this, and it also works for ME3 (as well as any other games based on the UT3 engine).

For this to work, you must not launch the game via Origin. Instead, you have to use the desktop shortcut that was probably created during installation. Right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties". In the field that contains the path to "MassEffect3.exe", you need to add the parameter -nohomedir after the last quotation mark.

In my case, the path looks like this:
"F:\\Games\\Mass Effect 3\\Binaries\\Win32\\MassEffect3.exe" -nohomedir

The parameter "nohomedir" makes ME3 ignore your "My Documents" folder and instead create a "Save" folder in the same directory the game itself is installed. Your save games will now be stored under $your_installation_path/BIOGame/Save.

Again, for this to work, you must ALWAYS start ME3 using the shortcut containing the parameter. Otherwise the game will not be initialized correctly, and will neither be able to find your save games, nor create new ones.

Thanks very much to both of you - Alanna, the -nohomedir command works fine (to my great relief!), and deviataz, I'm able to find my new .pcsav files now, thanks to your example. Thanks a bunch!
