Perhaps I'm being too harsh, but the similarities are unsettling. 2 series that start off strong and thought-provoking devolve into convoluted mazes at the very end that contradict every moral theme that had been built upon. Granted, Evangelion's failings were due in large part to a budget that had dwindled to pocket lint and a director who was in the middle of a nihilistic psychological meltdown.

Still, the fan reaction in both cases not only for clarification but a more narratively cohesive conclusion that doesn't sabotage their artistic image was justified (if not a little overzealous).

And when we finally do get something, it's a highly clarified and polished conclusion that has not only chosen to keep the bulk of the end intact but also derides the fanbase for even daring to criticize their original idea (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, REFUSAL ENDING)!

Sorry for the rant. I have cookies but the guy I got them from makes me nervous...
