Basically along the lines of
Asari have a prothean beacon on there homeworld that they have studied for hundreds if not thousands of years that gave them a technological edge over the other races, so how did they not know about the reapers?

Indeed... never got why Anderson's multiculturality prevented him from having an accent, yet there are very obvious accents in the game (notably French)...
