For me this is probably the biggest storytelling disappointment in fantasy/ science fiction history, in any medium.
I remember back in 1999, Star
wars fans waiting extremely excited to watch Star Wars : Episode One.
Then Jar Jar hit the screen, as well as the Darth Vader is the Jesus of
the force angle, and many many fans hated it.
I was one of them, but in time I grew to accept it for what it was and I
got over it.
In fact I got to the point, where I almost like the movie itself now.
The reaction to the Mass Effect 3 story is much worse than that, and I
am sure many of those fans aren't willing to forgive bioware.
Forgiveness won't be happening, with me and Mass Effect 3 either.
As, a huge fan of the series and the story telling in general, I simply
didn't expect it to lay a big egg in the end.
I'm not as successful as Bioware is, but I do know this, if you have a
proven demographic of 4/5 million fans, you don't disrespect them by
trying to being in a different demographic.
Mass Effect 3 seems to cater to people who are action junkies, who have
attention span disorders or people who are just too lazy to pay
attention in general.
At the same time, trying to desperately hold on to it's core fanbase.
While you'll find insane people (usually religious Zealots) complaining
about outlandish things, such as issues with homosexual relationships
(little to none was made about the lesbian/homosexual relationships in
Mass effect 2) any rational person wouldn't have issue with it.
Ignore them.
However the people below is whom you need to pay attention to.
There seems to be a overwhelming theme, of passionate fans complaining
about writing gaps and horrible ending choices, which should cater to
fans, who want both happy, sad, good, evil endings.
They have a great point, that they feel cheated, I feel cheated as well
and the only hope is enough voices get together that forces Bioware to
fix it in DLC.
However knowing bioware they would probably charge for it.
That would be a stretch but based on the negative backlash that made
them rewrite a novel, there is at least some hope it could happen.
What bothers me the most is, the full script was leaked a year ago, and
there was a huge backlash from the glaring flaws in the story.
The two major complains were, that the choices from 1 and 2 didn't seem
to matter that much.
That the 7 non happy endings were horrible.
Even people who were okay, with their not being a happy ending
complained about the idea itself.
A god kid, who dies close to the start of the game, made of light.
Created the reapers to bring balance and order to the universe.
If that doesn't sound stupid to you, I don't know what will.
To top that off every option he gives you, doesn't allow Shepard to have
victory.
There are those who wanted a total victory with loss ending, along with
ending up with a romance interest and they didn't get it.
When dying unless you got with certain romantic choices, you don't even
get to see them flash before your eyes because bioware didn't care to
add them.
Casey Hudson the director of the game itself, promised to fix the
endings, and that rewrites would happen.
Comparing to the original script, and now beating the game... nothing
changed.
So he publicly said he takes what the fans said seriously and that he
would fix the disappointment of the script, yet he didn't.
Go to the bioware forums, and read the spoilers for yourself, in fact I
advise you to do that, just so you expect the game is a disappointment
going in, it will help ease the betrayal feeling.
In short, the story feel rewritten by different people, with different
motivations several times and it shows.
In fact it turns into a batch of horrible ideas in the end and slowly
mutates into a horrible plot hole ridden monster at the end of the
games, trying desperately to give players meaning to their times spent
in 1 and 2.
It fails is almost every way.
There are times the writing does shine almost if someone with a clear
understand and a passion for the universe wrote it.
Then there are other times, it looks like a writer with limited concepts
of the game took over and didn't bother to apply much effort to avoid
plot holes.
The ending backs this up and problems with the choices you made in other
games, being extremely off in times, is the proof of this.
Drew Karpyshyn, was the creative mind behind the IP which is mass
effect.
He also wrote most of the first two games, and knights of the old
republic.
When he said he was retiring from bioware (not writing mind you) that it
was totally his choice.
That should have been a major red flag for me, he wasn't involved in
this game at all and it shows.
He ideas would have been much better, and shows how much Mac Walters the
lead writer had to do with the quality of writing in the first two
games.
If a troll took over the script and chose to write a horrible ending, I
am not sure they could have done a better job than Mac Walters.
My favorite metacric fan review of the day!
