I'd like to believe that the whole ME series where Shepard succeeds where all other cycles before him have failed is a just part of a cycle and that the Prothean and Shepards cycle are just a cycle within a cycle. Meaning the Reapers were actually in their own cycle and before that there was a cycle similar to what the Reapers did.
