Romanced Ash, then Tali, then Tali again, btw. Don't know if that matters.

How does one actually go about getting the Aethyta interaction? I never ran into Aethyta during my ME3 experience...

She's at a bar on the Presidium Commons, and you can talk to her before the Cerberus coup.

I don't think she meant it like the relationship variant of the term. My femshep who was only friends with Liara got the "girlfriend" name and I just thought it was the "friendship" variant of the term and moved on.
Don't forget that you've all slept with Liara several times - mind meld rings a bell? - and as her mother she's rather protective of her offspring. In her eyes sleeping with her daughter might constitute a relationship...
It doesn't count. There's a vid where Aethyta calls Shep "Cerberus Commander" instead of "Cerberus boyfriend". So there might be some hidden trigger which makes Aethyta say 'girlfriend/boyfriend'.

I'll take "Hidden Trigger" for 400. I didn't romance Liara yet it said 'boyfriend' and I didn't do Shadow Broker DLC, the only things up until that point that might qualify are Normandy Conversations & Presidium Commons Conversations.

There's no quest or anything, she's very obscure. After speaking with her you can get Liara to speak with her over the course of the next few Presidium visits.

on a side note: is it just me or does she look COMPLETELY different? I didn't even understand that is was her until she started speaking
Yeah. It kind of made me angry. I was like, wow, did they just choose some random asari face? I thought she looked so unique in ME2. Was very disapointed when I saw her appearance so underwhelmingly altered in ME3.

Well, many NPCs looks different in this game. I barely recognized Chakwas, Bailey and Udina too. I'm sure it has something to do with changes to the face code, which also doesn't allow you to import your custom Shep face correctly.

At least it made my femShep look pretty.

The other is her 'drunken Shepard beer-goggles' look. She appears considerably younger.
And rather than check which one was the proper model and texture to use, the artist responsible just grabbed one of the character models and worked with it. Unfortunately, it was the wrong set.

Maybe the variable that's checked isn't Shep's feelings toward Liara.
The conversation is based on Liara's feelings toward Shepard.
Just a possibility.
