The journal is a HUGE let down for me. Why change something that worked flawlessly to something that is useless? At least it should tell you to which cluster system to go instead of making you guessing and scanning and then getting Reapers after you for nothing (I hate scanning, now even more than before). It should sort your finished quests to different category, which it does not, now they are just greyed out. I have seen journals that at least let you see the dialogue you had when you got the quest, which is good enough for me. But no, BioWare wants us to make little notes or get a super memory.

I do feel that the journal, as far as side missions are concerned, is severely lacking. Even in ME1 we had a little graphic or two indicating that we had obtained the key item required in that mission. All it is in ME3 is a blurb that tells you what you need, where to go, and lets you figure it out whether you've finished it or not. That may be fine for marathon players who have no work or school to divide their play sessions with, but it does not work out very well for me.

I know I stopped playing yesterday to do some work on another me1 character and when I picked up the game today, the twenty (exaggeration) missions that I had confused the hell out of me....

I spent more time trying to find out where I was going (and in some cases, where I have already been) than I did completing the actual quests them selves....

If you would please kindly patch the journal sometime in the future I would be grateful.

I've experienced the same and this is such a huge letdown.. I certainly did not expect this from BioWare and have not experienced similar problems in any BW game until ME3. What the hell were you thinking BW? Give us a bit more direction like um..all your previous RPGS!!!

Ye Gods, I thought this was just me. Right now I'm tearing my haiir our trying to work out which system to visit for a particular side quest. There's absolutely no clues given whatsoever, no indication of here to go, and no proper method of tracking.

What the heck was wrong with the ME2 system, it was intuitive, it worked perfectly...?

I guess the idea behind this new ME3 version is that Bioware thought it would be 'fun' to make us randomly scan through every single system and cluster until we get lucky and stumble upon the assignment location.

In addition, I seem to have a whole bunch of assignments for the Citadel, speak to this guy, find that guy.. all in my personal log, but no mention of them in the journal. Presumably I'm suppose to rely upon memory?

edit: I've finally discovered a system for completing the side missions - Basically type the name of it into Google, and read results until you find one that actually mentions the location. Will use this method throughout the rest of the game, as life is just too short to scan random locations on a pot-luck basis until I hit the mark.

Completely throws me out of the game, and shatters immersion, but needs must.

I'd personally say that this journal issue is actually game breaking, for me at least.

The most I might do now is look in my journal to see what quests I have, but I stopped doing that toward the end of the game, because for some reason, the game was defaulting to opening my journal over halfway down the page, so I'd have to spend forever scrolling back up to the top to get from the grayed out quests to the ones that were actually active. Highly annoying.

Anyway, what I got to doing was, when I'd find an artifact or something on a quest, I'd go to the Citadel, pop open the map, look for a name on the map of someone that wasn't a crewman or NPC that is always around and then I'd go find the person and it was usually the person that needed the item I just got. Otherwise, that journal is a disaster compared to ME1 and ME2 journals. Talk about a failure to heed the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Besides the ending and the bugged face import, this is my biggest disappointment.

The journal is absolute garbage. No updates? No acknowledgement that a quest has been completed beyond greyed out text?

How could they have screwed it up this bad?

I'm with on this one. It's really strange that the journal doesn't update with quest progress on side quests.

I have a dozen missions open. How am I supposed to remember how far along I am in every one?

Bioware is forcing me to use the wikis. Great.

I figured out a method. I just use the map as much of humanly possible.

Hate the new journal too... It's like Bioware took a step back in some aspects of the game.

The main thing I hate is that I can't select a current mission...instead I'm constantly bumping into npc's that are part of other side missions that I'm not focused on...it mixes everything up.

The other thing that bothers me: when I first started receiving side quests I was excited to tackle them...then I find out that some of them are just that flying and scanning mini game.

Bioware stop changing stuff that wasn't broken in the first place.

yeah I started doing the map thing aswell...it shows what main characters and quest characters are in your current location...that helps a bit.

I dont have a problem with them changing it up, but dont have me sit there and wonder where the hell I am supposed to go? A big WTF for me regarding side quests and how described to us. Not only do they not tell you where to go, but they don't tell you they don't open until later. This is the one ME3 fail for me.

The journal is probably the worst thing about the game for me so far but the game is still amazing.

I hate the Journal too, but it makes it so you have to EXPLORE the galaxy and see whats out there, not just X to Y then back to X. Take time to explore what you have access to, clear EVERY system in a star then return to the Citadel wander the whole place and see if anyone lights up to talk to. You dont have to have a quest to find some of the stuff along that line too there are quests you can get but you wont have access to the system till later. Just do like you do on missions, look EVERYWHERE for stuff and take your time, dont rush unless it constrains you to rush.

I hope this help you all as you seem to be as initially frustrated as I was. (I do wish it would say when ive found a quests item in the journal thou, just scanned 3 systems so back to the Citadel)

Yeah, like you said, we have to search a lot. Problem is, sometimes even after acquiring the many 'fetch random items' BW seems to love since DA2, I tend to have no idea I have it. The journal doesn't update. So I have to get to the citadel and bring up the map on each level. It becomes a persistent pain in the backside once you hit the 20th time. Makes me wonder why they didn't handle it with much care..

That's the only issue I have with ME3. Disappointing in that department but so fulfilling and rewarding in every other way. Loving the characters, quests..quests that have MEANING (look it up BW, refresh your memory and lose the stupid 'I eavesdrop, I deliver' shiz).

The map was more helpful than the journal most times, the journal other than the times it actually told you the cluster to search in was worthless.

The journal was so frustrating in this game. I mean there were hardly any real quests anyway, but it just compounded this fact by not updating at all and giving you no recap of progress or indication of what the heck to do next.

You have to go back to the Spectre office once you done the evacuation of Benning. You can buy the information about him there or something like that.

This is actually just a back-up. There a number of quest items laying around in sidemissions or N7 mission maps, but it's easy to miss them. If you complete a given mission without getting something in it, those items--including quest items--will become available for purchase at Spectre Requisitions.

I wouldn't say flying through a solar system hammering "scan" qualifies as exploration.

Had the journal worked properly, sidequests might not have been such a ****ing chore. As it stands, it just exacerbates the issues with the crappy fetch quests and mind numbing scanning.

Well who would care about searching in depth for something that you don't even know sometimes where to get. Especially when you can buy it for 1000 credit ^_^

After playing the game for a bit I have to agree the journal system is garbage. Especially in the citadel quests where you get zero hints about what to do.

Clearly my biggest problem with the game so far. It managed to turn something I loved to do in the previous games (side quests) in some pointless time sink by having you basically do laps in the citadel everytime you go there. . I used to like visiting the citadel once in a while to take a break from the main missions. Now I feel compelled to actually run everywhere I can when I dock to see if I can deliver all the crap I cant keep track of. Not to mention you pick quests for systems that arent available yet which you only find out when you already searched everywhere first. Add to that the fact that most of side quests fail if you advance past a certain main mission. I mean that would be ok if there was some kind of warning somewhere, like lets say the journal.. This joke of a journal made for the worst side quest system yet, they just feel like a chore, I might just skip them altogether on my second playthrough and get a crappy ending.

At the very least I'd like for the journal to update telling me whether I've passed or failed a mission once it's grayed out. It would also be nice if it updated once I picked up a needed mission object, I really don't want to have to keep a pen and paper around while playing :\\

Bioware:" hey this isn't broken, lets fix it!"
