I hear you. The quest I couldn't find was the dang Elcor one. I looked all over the galaxy map trying to find it.

Of all the things Bioware should have been fixing, they decide to mess with the journal?

I'm still surprised someone could screw up a journal system this badly.

List of Issues that should never have been there:

1. Changing discs constantly between certain missions.
2. Problems connecting to Galaxy at War.
3. I think i speak for everyone, a TERRIBLE journal.

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love Mass Effect. But the problems listed take away from the fun. I would love to see the knucklehead who said, "ya lets make mission info really vague and make our fans get up to change discs as much as possible." (O__o)

Any idea where the RP went in RPG?!?!?!?!?!

Run off blind to search a system you don't know you need to look in that isn't unlocked yet to retrieve something you might have overheard half a conversation about while you were going somewhere else.
Lame side quest, lame journal. Makes sense to me.

yeah the journal system is the worst of the trilogy by far. You can usually get markers for people on the Citadel but the scanning quests themselves are pretty tedious, wish they'd have done more ME1 type sidequests and have a journal that UPDATES!

ya a patch to fix the journal would be nice. They actually had a really good one in ME2, seem really odd and backwards to change it for ME3. It doesn't stream line the game at all just makes it frustrating trying to figure out where to go, who to talk to or what to do next...

I haven't completed the game yet so I couldn't comment on the ending, but the journal/side quest stuff is seriously putting a dampener on my overall enjoyment of the game (and I am enjoying it nonetheless!)

I found myself sprinting through the Presidium Commons, desperately trying not to pick up any more side quests as the sheer mass of them that I already have (and have no idea where to go to sort them) is already piling up. I think the "overheard conversation" mechanic works really well on the Normandy where there isn't an over abundance of crew members. On the Citadel however I feel like a character from an M Night Shyamalan (sp?) film trying to distinguish usefulness from gibberish from a sea of voices swarming my brain.

So far, the side quests and forward rolling when attempting to desperately find cover are my only qualms. I'd love them to tighten those up a little bit.

You have to go back to the Spectre office once you done the evacuation of Benning. You can buy the information about him there or something like that.

But I agree the journal is confusing as hell in ME3. So far with some exploration of Citadel i've been able to complete every side mission.

*spoiler I suppose*

You can actually find his dog tags on Benning which saves you having to purchase the Spectre info.

As people already said, a giant indication of how the FPS elements took precedence on RPG, when you f-up on something that you previously did perfectly it means that you just didn't care about that part, that not only did you not put any effort into it, it's like you put negative effort if that's scientifically possible in some way!

In my opinion the vagueness of the journal is an okay design decision. The players are already running around Citadel or Scanning stuff any way. This is just more rewards for exploration. Its a matter of player taste if they like this or not. I actually don't care for the obvious trail of breadcrumbs in my RPG.

The poor design choice is a combination of two things.

One, you can unlock quests that you can't complete until you complete a quest on the main quest line. Combined with, two, there are quests that expire when you complete something along the main quest line. One or the other would have been fine, but both in combination is anti-fun.

With no way of knowing (unless you're wikiquesting the whole way). Do I need to complete a main quest to open this one up, or have I simply missed something and now the quest will close after I advance the main story line? Its that combination that was a bad choice by the devs.

Seriously in agreement with most. The journal is a major downfall in ME3. Methinks they were far too worried about appealing to the multi-player crowd and dumbing things down to worry about it. The citadel map is mildly annoying with it's "hints" as to where things are for the most part. But the galaxy map is a joke now. If you don't happen to have a great memory, or take detailed notes about what planets are in what minor system of what major system, you'll waste a lot of time and fuel, or spend time crashing game to alt-tab to a guide or map online. HATE it. Then, just try to remember if you picked up the item already?

If I wanted to take notes on everything, I'd go back to playing games like Daggerfall, Ultima and a plethora of oldies.

And if I wanted to make maps, I'd go back to Zork.

Yup, agreed. Alot of the side quests are glitched too.
