In ME2 all weapons received bonuses against certain defences (sniper&pistol against armor, smg&shotgun against shields). It seems to me that this system was removed and all weapons do equal dmg against all defenses. A visit to the range seem to support my theory. So now pistols and smg seem to suck against all target, and are redundant to soldiers , and only usefull for support for power based classes like adapt and engineer who benefit from their low weight.

It was my impression that the bonuses are still there. For example, the description of the Eviscerator mentions that it's very good against armor.

I'm pretty sure now just specific weapons get bonuses or penalties against different defenses, not entire classes of weapons. Probably was changed because of the addition of the weight mechanic.
