Just curious. It seems to trivialize lots of combats.
Anyone else feel guilty about using storm of the century?

A little. But half the spells a Mage has trivialize combat in the first place, so w/e.

I sort of house ruled it so I can't start combat with it, but...no, not really. Its too awesome not to use on my "cheese" playthrough.

Not really. At first I often underestimated its radius so I would get caught in it...Casting it without incurring too much friendly fire offsets its cheese factor a bit.

how does one do storm of the century?

Spell Might + Blizzard + Tempest

it's actually not a very handy spell...powerful it may be, there aren't many circumstances that you can, or you prefer using the combination...

the spell is actually...blizzard+inferno+tempest

That would explain while you're finding it underwhelming. Its Blizzard + Spell Might'd Tempest
I have Morrigan cast Blizzard (she doesn't need Spell Might) then make sure to have my Tempest Spell Might PC start casting fractionally later and its incredibly easy to pull off.

well, just citing the dao guide...
Blizzard + Inferno + Tempest becomes Storm of the Century (spectacular electrical storm).

Spell Might + Blizzard + Tempest
... is correct, I use it all the time. The radius is much larger than either blizzard or tempest. So, you can blind fire it into any big room where you think there are enemies and basically wipe them all out. Hardly anything can get out and if they do, they are severely weakened.

Fireing that thing off inside buildings is hillarious. What kind of building materials are they using to keep those places standing. I want to hire a Fereldan contractor to build my house, you could drop an A-bomb on it and it would still be standing.

It better be good since it costs Blizzard + Tempest + 100 mana. Also the Storm loses its Freeze ability (from Blizzard). Unless you have Wade's Dragonscale set on (for the -25% fatigue cost) Storm of the Century will just about remove most , if not all, of your mana bar.
Sometimes I wish I could use Blizzard + Tempest + Spell Might WITHOUT it turning into Storm since 90% of the time its complete overkill (the enemies die in 3 ticks) and your standing there like a chump for 30 seconds waiting for it to go.

Interesting...I just googled...and some say that spell might+blizzard+tempest gives you the storm of the century and the codex...
but for me, I did it blizzard+inferno+tempest...and that gave me stc and the codex too...I suppose there are just so many different spell combinations out there...that would eventually end up giving the same effects

In any case, Inferno + Blizzard + Tempest would require an extra mage/timed cast, making it much much more difficult to pull off
...but I find it hard to believe that Inferno would go into making that lightning storm.

well, in theory, you cast blizzard first, and most likely those in the area of effect will get frozen...giving you time to cast the remaining two...I do storm of the century by myself, haha.

if your not doing blizz and tempest with spell might on 2nd spell cast, your NOT doing SOTC!
And yea...I do bliz first then have 2nd mage do spell mighted tempest
There is no inferno is SOTC.

Whats happening is that your probably casting Inferno while Blizzard is still running, so when you drop Tempest it checks to see that Blizzard is still active and fires off Storm Of The Centuary. Leading to the assumption that Inferno was needed , when it wasn't.

I'd go test out this inferno business but I don't have inferno. At any rate, I love storm of the century. My mage is supposed to be a complete and total badass and storm of the century makes that so. I think I might do a solo run with a mage at some point... that will be fun.

Guilty about using Storm? Nah... I find using Blizzard + (earthquake to help root them before blizz freezes them) + Tempest to be better, since a lot of times people just run right through Storm + Earthquake.
But in general? The only thing I feel guilty about is keeping Shimmering Shield on even when I'm OOM (obvious exploit), and chaining multiple cone of colds against reds (CoC seems to have an unnaturally high resist check). For spell combos, it would be Death Hex + Death Cloud, since you only need Hex for every caster to participate in the combo, as it doesn't dispel Cloud.
Even I don't feel guilty about Forcefield, but that's more to do with the fact that Heroic Defense is almost equal to FF considering I run a dodge tank. XD

I feel guilty about using mages period. The only spells I cast with the one mage I bring are heal spells (pots are unreliable, as I've modded their cooldowns).

Wow, I played through twice and never knew there was such thing in the game

To be honest i've never used it, i only keep a mage in my party for heals (and because i enjoy morrigan), and throwing the occasional blizzard/sleep.

SOC with 2 mages was the game on easy mode since both spells needed can be cast through doors.
If you use hold, line the 2 mages side by side, and cast each spell at their maximum distance from you, you'll be outside the storm zone. But not by much, the expanded zone for SOTC is massive.
Great for places like the ruined temple.
