The Crucible is an all-powerful weapon strong enough to destroy the Reapers. No one actually knows what it does, not even the Protheans, because it's been revised/built up by countless Cycles. The only thing anyone apparently knows is that its capable of mass energy release, or something.
So since this magical device is the only way to stop the Reapers, it must be pretty important. Each Cycle discovers they won't have enough time to finish it, so they preserve the blueprints so the next can build it. Unfortunately it seems like, for whatever reason, the previous Cycle hides it so well the current Cycle won't discover the blueprints until the Reapers are invading. Would it hurt for the Previous Cycle to be a bit less vague on hiding the blueprints? Possibly put it on a planet that has life that could potentially evolve? I love Mars and all but why there? Granted its close to Earth, but for some reason we didn't bother exploring much before we hopped into the ME Relays and took off to Hot-Blue-Babe land.
Crucible pt 2: Magical Deus-Ex Machina machine
Instead of being a conventional death-ray weapon that blows up Reapers, the Crucible is a magic Deus-ex Machina with the power to completely change the galaxy by just doing 1 of 3 things. Really? I know this is science-fiction/fantasy but so far they do a somewhat decent job of explaining technology (Other than calling anything too magical "reaper-tech"), but now they throw in this thing and give you 3 choices, that immediately and irrevocably change the Galaxy in a matter of minutes.
Yes. 20 hour campaign and it concludes with a device that changes everything in a couple of minutes.
Okay, for a minute lets accept this giant floating middle finger and lets talk about the end results. Let's assume you choose to blow up reapers/tech. Do all of the alien races get sent to their respective home worlds? Or are a majority of aliens stuck on Earth? What about the fleets? Did all of their ships just evaporate? Or did they all make heroic one last minute dashes through the ME Relay? What about the ruined planets? With millions of people still in need of aid? This war has displaced hundreds of thousands of refugees. Have they all just been abandoned and left to fend for themselves? Or did the Crucible fix everything and turn it into paradise? What happened to the people on the Citadel when it was taken? I assume they're all dead, sorry Bailey!
Now, here is why the endings of ME3 are so disappointing.
There is no satisfactory closure. The point of this game was to create an Alliance among all of these Alien races in order to gather a fleet big enough to stop the Reapers (Or at least try to). You fix problems and grudges that have lasted centuries and forge new friendships. The Galaxy has forever been brought together in this epic struggle for survival. Shephard, the bad-ass who can do anything, has saved the Galaxy going on 3 times and has done way more than one person should do. He's seen countless friends and comrades die to aid him and the Galaxy's plight. Unfortunately the game ends with the Crucible pretty much ending the ME series in one fell swoop with everyone cut off or dead. You don't find out what happens to anybody, except maybe a few people due to your ending choice.
What would have been preferable? That not only Shephard (None of the "chosen crucible ****") but also the millions who fought, finally destroy the Reapers. The Galaxy can finally relax and begin the process of rebuilding and taking back lost worlds (Let's assume the Reaper's minions are still active. Husks, etc). Shephard helps in this, and ultimately becomes a Legend that he so well deserves. He ends up retiring or pursuing a less stressful role with his LI and things couldn't be better (Well, you know what I mean).
You then get a small cutscene with each of your currently alive companions, showing you what they ended up doing. Tali helps rebuild her homeworld with the Geth.
Garrus becomes a Turian general (Or something).
Kaiden continues as a spectre (Saves suff?)
Vega completes N7 and gets his own squad, regains confidence as a Leader.
EDI joins Joker and.. have cyber babies?
Liara goes back to researching, maybe explores Tuchanka and aids the Krogan in discovering their lost roots. Admiral Hackett retires or becomes a Council member.
Possbily Anderson takes Hacketts place, or retires to help rebuild London.
With the current ME storyline ended, it leaves off room for future ME games. You start out as a new Hero human (or alien, although I doubt it) to help save the Galaxy from whatever (lolKrogans). Maybe Shephard could be in this game? As an older (The new game could use ME3 save file for face information, athough makes it older), grizzled legendary badass who is somewhat of a mentor to your character or aids you with words of wisdom before you go confront the Big Bad.
Hell, I would have even accepted a Halo 3 ending with Shephard appearing that he's lying dead in a floating Crucible after blowing up all of the Reapers. Or the Catalyst ending up being the energy of a sentient being. Shepard's Paragon choice obviously sacrificing himself to destroy the Reapers. Renegade could be shoving Kaiden/Ashley into it (I'd love to finish off Kaiden. If only I could have left both of them strapped to that bomb).
Next time, Cerberus!
Edit: "Good ending" or a better conclusion will most likely be DLC. Amirite?
