Sword and shield is great. I didn't want a sword and shield last playthrough. I wanted a stinky dwarf, cold witch, and sarcastic rock. Back to the subject at hand.

Ok I've been playing on normal level all the way through my main is now level 16 I have Shale wyn (is that how you spell it) & Ogrin with me. I'm a mage who took an odd combination of Arcane Warrior and Shape shifter.

I've tried 3 times now to beat the brood mother and the nearest I've got is to get here down to about an 6th of her health at which time I have win and my main still standing, Shale and Ogrin having both fallen, I've even ressurected Ogrin once, before I han out of health potions, and mana potions.

So my main and wyn are still standing against 6 yellow tentacles, the central brood mother, 2 shrieks and 2 archers that have yet appeared we are out of potions, so what do we do......answer.......kill two Shrieks & one archer before my main falls and I give up and quit the game in frustration, since I'd already survived 3 waves and driven back the first batch of tentacles.

This battle is long frustrating and as far as I can tell near impossible to win on normal level.

Did no one at Bioware try to balance the game.....it should be hard in places but not almost totally impossible...

Anyway giving up for the night now to frustrated to go on for a while.

Lol....so...you not taking enough health and mana potions, or not reloading at the auto save that happens *right* before the fight and going and getting more health and mana potions, is something that Bioware should have forseen and coded for...like maybe having a potion vending machine right next to the boss for you?

This fight is totally doable on nightmare, with a variety of parties, including an all melee party.

gotta cast inferno on the broodmother while you kill her tentacles. ^_^ it's too easy, I killed her on accident with that strategy.

Apologies if someone already put this in, I didn't have the patience to read through all of the posts. This is what I do:

Move the party to the back of the room (opposite side of the Broodmother). The tentacles will follow you. Focus fire and take out each tentacle one by one until they are all gone and stage two starts. When the tentacles retreat for stage two of the fight, stay back and just switch all your characters to range damage (melee whips out the bows and crowsbows - no you don't need special skills with them. Auto attack works just fine). The only thing Broodmother can do at range is spit poison. The poison doesn't hurt much, is easily healed and can be easily mitigated with a salve (even more so if shale is in your party and has the large nature crystal equipped standing in front to eat the damage).
When the tentacles come back out, switch your melee back to melee weapons.

Rinse, repeat, dead. Move along. Easy peasy.

First time I encountered brood mother, my other party all died when brood is at half Hp, only leiliana with a bow standing on rock directly infront brood mother. And she just shot brood mother to death with help of a few health pot. And this is at nightmare difficulty. I never thought it would be this simple, lol

Potion vending machines. Sheesh! Do you guys (the ones who say this) realize that you can have your potions specialist CREATE POTIONS DURING COMBAT??? I carry the supplies with. Lots of flasks, elfroot, lyrium, etc. I make what I need on demand, depending on the situation. I have one person always available to make at least basic bombs, and one person available to make potions. All of which can be done DURING combat. If you have the supplies, then you can make what you need, when you need it. Vending machines, you bet. That way you don't stock up 20 of something you don't end up using, and shorting yourself something you do. A flask works for bombs, lyrium or healing. Just make sure you have your supplies.
