edit: both are in a chest in the locked treasury during the assault. your mom has the key and gives it to you.

You find them in the Vault - the sword is on the weaponrack and the shield I think was in the locked chest ...

In the Cousland treasury. It's marked on the map.

In Highever, there's a vault where two soldiers were playing cards on duty before the attack. It's in a dead-end corridor off the main ring near the library.

I hear that these are needed to kill Howe, is that right?

When speaking to your mother about how to escape, you can say something like "There must be something else we can do!" which will start the family sword quest. Alternatively, you can just go to the armory which will also initiate the quest.

No. I don't know where that rumor started from.

They are not needed for anything. They are just nice items for the first few levels of the game. By level 10 or so they are pretty junk in comparison to what you will be finding as loot.

Is there any benefit or story consequences for getting these items? I am wondering if it is worth to start back at the origin story (Just finished ostagar+shale).

Or why, he isn't superman and they are not kryptonite.

No real benefit - I think it is cool to show your Family crest as you go thru the game - but other then rp reasons, there are no benefits.

Someone brought up the fact that the Star metal is Blue kryptonite (which I guess counters the green and red stuff) ... so go figure

Your mother does make a mention about how this should be the blade that slits Howe's throat or something to that effect, but it's not necesarry to kill howe. Starfang works just fine
I had meant to equip that blade for poetic justice (had even kept in my inventory for just such a purpose) but forgot by the time I found him.

Superman? Phft. Howe is Tim Curry, who can only be killed by someone even more charming than him.
