How They Could Have Fixed the Ending Without Spending One Extra Penny

I just played through the ending again, and I'm struck by something:  After you make your choice, you see a video of soldiers running around London, taking cover, and then being affected by your war score.  Either they jump up and cheer, they narrowly avoid death while Big Ben blows up, or they are burned to crisp (as is all of Earth.)

Why are we being shown random soldiers?

A very simple solution:  It should have been our squad members.  Minus the two who SHOULD have died from the beam (in my game, it mysteriously showed me Ashley had survived and made it to the crash landing of the Normandy).  Show me Garrus taking cover, show me James being burned to a crisp, whatever.  It can't possibly cost more than the video you already made.  It should have simply had our characters in it.  Then we'd know if they were alive, dead, whatever.

I still want to know if they actually stormed the beam with Shepard.

If anything this is absolutely my biggest problem with the ending. Has anyone turned around, or done detective work to see if they actually leave the shuttle with you?

Here's how they fix the ending without spending one penny.

You know that beautiful moment you get with Anderson, dying and looking down at a ruined earth, but knowing that your task is complete, that the reapers are defeated?

Just go straight from that to the some footage of the citadel activating, and then thereapers being destroyed, and roll credits.

That would be infinitely better than what we have now.

i turned around while running toward the beam. squad mates were not there. and yes, Earth was burned to a crisp for me, probably because my green bar was too low.

no they dont, I have turned around and not taken a single step, the reaper beams dont hit you and you can stand there all day,  The UI acts as though they are with you but they never appear on the screen.  you only initiate the cutscen after crossing pre-determined point on the map.

That's actually a brilliant idea, OP.

Infinitely better than flinging the Normandy across the galaxy. It's absurd.

Sent that idea to Christ Priestly, he gives the forum feedback to the team.

I didn't check to see if my teammates were behind me.

I was too busy trying to serpentine Harbinger's beam.

Honestly, I would have been happier with an ending that had me getting vaporized and the Reaper's winning.

Regarding the new ending, a lot of people want to keep playing with their Shepard, or at least get some closure.

I agree that would have been almost perfect...then instead of stargazer at the end, have Liara's time capsule be found years later and hear her talk about Shep and all the people/Squad Members who affected the outcome...

Two ways for a better ending:
.
If you have a high enough reputation, and if you saved Anderson, he should be taken up with you to talk to the catalyst. Then, offer the same choices, but if you stopped the illusive man from killing Anderson, HE SHOULD TAKE YOUR PLACE in synthesization. A bonus for choosing to sacrifice yourself.

OR

Shep goes up alone, is given the choices but is told that she won't survive. You make your choice, and if you pass some sort of check, your squadmates (led by your LI) /Normandy drags your **** out of there. It seems like die hard fans and people who have put so much love and effort into this game deserve to give their Shep a happy ending.

I honestly thought that was the end, until I heard "THE CRUCIBLE ISN'T WORKING". I could have dealt with Anderson and Shepard dying together, and I was honestly in tears at that point in time because it was such a great moment...and then the catalyst BS happened.

This would be amazing. Gah, why couldn't it have ended like that? :crying:

The single biggest problem I have with the ending is the destruction of the mass relays. As a paragon Shep, I spent a lot of time unifying the galaxy and proving that life regardless of type or background can be united. Now everyone who helped me prove that is stranded in sol. The galaxy is completely cut off from each other and no one will ever see their home world again. I didn't go through all those touching moments on Rannoch with Tali picking out a spot for the house she was going to build that her father promised her, just to have her trapped somewhere with a crashed Normandy to never see her planet again...

I don't understand why Shepard has to die, and the relays destroyed. They could have preserved the relays and continued the Mass Effect series. Of course they can retire Shepard without actually killing her and co.off entirely. The Warden in DA:O will never be the protagonist of future DA games, and yet the player is generously allowed to believe the Warden is traipsing around somewhere continuing there adventures.

The Mass Effect endings don't provide any closure and are just too sad. It's realistic to end a war story with some survivors. Having Shep and c. survive does not mean it's a Disney ending.

This is so frustrating. On topic, the OP makes a great point, but I still don't think it provides enough closure. The Op's suggestion does at least provide more closure than what we currently have.

Talk about a game with varying endings.  ME3 reminded me of DAO uniting all these forces together to fight the big bad dragon (Reapers) but to make it diff...they tried to give us the Deus Ex HUMAN REVOLUTION choice system...oh and those were to "best" possible endings.

I played since the beginning afraid of the bittersweet ending everyone was talking about. All I wanted was to at least save Shep and LI (which had awesome lines btw) ... but as I watched the ending, I'd just rather the reapers have won. Or as ot was said, my shep died there in the end.
And it was SO stupid to give characters so many good lines towards Shepard, as Liara and Garrus (my LI) had... and then... no one mourns Shep!
I just see my Garrus walking around on that stupid jungle with his turian face -.- After all the awesome lines he said to my Shep....

I would have liked that.  Then we could avoid making a final choice that essentially ignores what you've done until now.  Have the fact that the Crucible was finished and connected be the signal that the cycle is over, don't force me to choose endings that all seem equally awful.

YES YES A 10000 times yes. And then depending on your readiness level you can have you or you and Anderson waking up in a hospital bed on the citadel, then we cut to a Dragon Age Origins epilogue and they tell us what is going on.

Here's my solution.

You keep Anderson alive, he's dying you both know it, you go up to Catalyst. And as his final act he takes Control and self destructs the Reapers.

That or letting us throw his corpse into the Synthesis beam and absconding in TIMs shuttle or something.
