At the end of the credits, we see a a Grandfather and a Grandchild speaking. We are basically told that the tale of Commander Shepard has been passed down from generation to generation. The child then asks his grandfather to tell him another story about "The Shepard". This moment is amazing, and is a major payoff. Knowing that our character has gone down in history and has become a legend of mythical proportions is incredible.

Bioware also set themselves up for some really incredible DLC possibilities. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll capitalize on it. After this scene is finished, Shepard is back on his/her ship. We're back to the point right before the final assault against the Reapers. This sucks, because we've basically just erased our last 4 or 5 hours of gameplay.

Instead of having players go back in time, and making DLC happen happen in the past, I have a different proposal.

The Legend of the Shepard

The post credits scene absolutely screams tall-tales. Once the player is back on his ship, s/he should be playing through this mythical world of The Shepard. Every DLC pack from now on could be another tall-tale about Commander Shepard. The beauty of this, is that Bioware could take us back and forth in time, and not have to worry about how it fits in with Mass Effect 3 as a whole. Allow us to explore these legends that have been passed down from generation to generation, and let us influence them through gameplay.

The From Ashes DLC would have lent itself to this concept perfectly. Finding a perfectly preserved, Fifty-thousand year old Prothean (an extinct alien species) out of nowhere is totally far-fetched. But in the context of tall-tales, it fits. The Legend of the Shepard is a perfect platform for future DLC, and Bioware's writers could get absolutely crazy with their concepts. Let the ship act as a hub to access these different tales.

A possible story that could fit in this context: Thresher Maws are ravaging Tuchanka. Depending on how the player handled the Genophage in ME3, the Threshers are either wiping out the last remnants of the Krogan, or they are destroying an infant civilization as it tries to rebuild. Together, Shepard, The Urdnot Clan leader, and Eve (if she survived), must fight these creatures to ensure the survival of the Krogan.

Through DLC like this, Bioware could explore the possible futures of the civilizations you saved as Commander Shepard.

It would take some work to create DLC like this, but Mass Effect is worth it. And best of all, players like me will continue to support the franchise with our money.

This rare, a positive thread about the epilogue.

During Grunt's Rite, it wasn't one Thresher Maw, it was 12. And trying to avoid that Reaper, I"m sorry I meant, 3 reapers, to get to the hammer controls on the bridge, Shepard fought a platoon of Brutes with just a pistol, a knife, and her bare hands.

Just sayin'

I'm really not interested in a "legendary" Shepard. I want a continuity that doesn't have to resort to dream seasons and folktales in order to maintain a story. It's this sort of contrivance that tries to make something more palatable without addressing the problem itself. With all due respect, I want the original problem fixed, not washed away by "legends.".

I think it would be awesome to play out the legends that are being passed down...and I think From Ashes should have been one of those legends.

You forgot that she only had one Medi-Gel, which she used to heal the last Maurader only to kill him.

Understandable, and I'm not asking for this as a substitution for fixing the problem. The problem needs to be fixed, first and foremost. I've written extensively on that as well. I just figured, there are enough threads about what needs to be fixed, but none about the possibilities going forward.

The Legend of the Shepard idea isn't a fix for the main story, as the main story shouldn't be a legend. It should be fact.

Understood.  My main concern is that I don't play "forever" games.  Once the credits roll, the game is done.  Finished.  Ended.  I was quite happy with the original Fallout 3 ending because it was a good ending, an honest death you might say.   Same with red dead redemtion and ME2.  Credits roll, game's over.  More DLC, I start a Newgate or revert to the save before the end sequence.  I don't see this happening in ME3 because there is simply no reason to get that ending again.

The joke didn't land the first time, and it didn't land just now. Give it up.
