as near as i can tell, here are the two endings i've seen, laid out for us:
"We are the Borg. We will adapt your biological and technolgical improvments to service us. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."
<insert the last 45 minutes of the BSG series finale here - i won't even begin to try to remember the anthrocentric ramblings that took place. basically - robots are bad, everyone should live happily with neanderthals and teach them basic skills.>
...
no.
BioWare, i am shocked and dismayed that this made it through upper level management approval.
i'm not arguing that everything has to be hunky-dory and they all fly off into space, happy as clams. a 30 second cutscene involving Joker trying to outrun a speeding wave through space, then him stepping onto a techno-alien world and then Joker and EDI standing with her leaning her head up against him was shockingly awful, and does little to inspire the emotions i think you were trying for.
personally, i felt Shepard should have been the Catalyst, having interacted with the Reapers so much this cycle. shoot the weapon, Shepard has to die. suddenly, the choice of whether to fire the weapon or not becomes far more critical to the outcome of the game - particularly if you have built up the assets to take out the Reapers over Earth.
i understand the face-off between Shepard and the Illusive Man (although the mind control thing is a bit off, but that's a separate rant for me). but having the child that died in the beginning of the game represent the Citadel - sorry, i'm not buying it.
The Crucible was designed to eliminate Reapers. how Mass Effect Relays, the Geth and EDI get mixed up with it is beyond me. and please don't try to rationalize it - you really can't.
