Hey, everyone.

I'm not one hundred percent sure that this is the best place for this, but it's keeping me from playing ME3 until the import bug is fixed and I was really hoping to sit down and have a Mass Effect marathon this weekend.

Anyway, the problem is this:

In ME1, I chose the default FemShep and made a few minor changes. Yay! Played the game, finished it. Now come the time of ME2, I decided that I would make a few changes to Shepard; hair, mostly. Well, in the end, I decided to abandon that but through the course of trying to recreate her, I noticed something.

The eyes aren't quite right. That is, the eyes I chose for ME1 Shepard and their ME2 counterparts are different.

I made this comparison image:

Posted Image

Now, I know it might not seem like a huge deal, but I've kind of gotten used to having Shepard's expression look a certain way (if a bit derpy, in comparison). I just accepted the imported face in ME2 and that was fine, but with this ME3 bug, even using the BioWare Tools linked in the official post, I can't recreate her original face.

Was it just a change in the mesh of the eyes, or did I miss something? Any help in letting me play ME3 this weekend would be appreciated!

Hey guys, I don't want to spam the forum, but I just posted this over at the Poll mentioned here somewhere (http://social.biowar...20/polls/29029/).
It's a (long) work-around that worked for me. Might work for you.

-------------------------------
I am also really upset by this issue - I've been a fan since ME1, and have the collectors edition for both 2 and 3. Bioware is normally a developer I trust not to snub their fans - maybe this is their fault, maybe it's not. Eitherway, the game has released today here in South Africa, 3 days after everyone else, and they still don't seem to be making a big deal about it.

I started out this evening not wanting to play the game until the issue had been sorted out by Bioware themselves, but today being a Friday, who knows when they'll decide to release a fix, if ever. From what I've seen around the 'net so far, they don't seem terribly concerned, apart from pawning us off to User fixes.

Well, I had a look at those 'User Fixes' and I wasn't completely satisfied - I'm pretty sure many people here feel the same. HOWEVER, I THINK I HAVE A WAY (albeit a manual, tedious way) to get your dudeShep to be as close as it seems you're going to get it. I CANNOT CONFIRM IF THIS WORKS WITH FEMSHEP JUST YET. This worked for me, and I am (mostly) satisfied; enough to be able to look at the character and believe he's MY SHEPARD. The method uses some of the user fixes posted by Bioware (in this thread: http://social.biowar...index/9661093/1), so I'm not completely making this up. (I've linked some shots at the bottom of this post so you can compare.)

PLEASE REALISE THAT THIS IS A REALLY LONG WORK AROUND. Just read through these steps first before you begin, I can't guarantee the results, and I wouldn't want you wasting your time. I'm just saying this worked for me, to a point where I am happy that my ME3 Shepard is the same Shep I've been through so much with.
Here's what I did:

1. I re-imported my ME1 characters into ME2 with the ME2 Config program. (New PC, I had uninstalled 1, so you might not need to)

2. Then I used the Save Editor mentioned by Bioware (http://legion.cal24.....php/site/index) and uploaded my ME1 save (you have to register on the site first unfortunately).

3. Go to 'My Saves' on the Save Editor, then 'Morph Head'. Export the YAML file, which you will need to save somewhere.

4. Then use the Mass Effect Tools site (http://masseffecttoo...k.org/index.php) and click on MaleUpload. Upload your YAML file with your Shep's name.

5. Click on MaleCode at the top of the page, enter your Shep's name and click 'Generate Facecode'. This opens a new tab, with a bunch of variables. Right at the bottom is the facecode you're looking for. Copy it, write it down, tattoo it to your hand. This is your lifeline to YOUR SHEPARD.

6. Open up Mass Effect 2. Create a new game, using your ME1 import character (I had to re-import mine using the config, your mileage may vary.)

7. Get through the intro and the Collector Attack until the start of the Project Lazarus movie sequence. Right after that you will get to adjust your appearance. Here comes the tricky bit. Yea yea, I know.

8. You have 3 options: Use Imported Appearance, Default, and Use Custom Appearance. Click on Custom Appearance, and paste your ME1 facecode in here. It won't look exactly like your Shep straight away. Don't panic.

9. Click the 'Back' arrow and you will find that the game (thankfully) saves the custom settings as they stand. You can therefore click between 'Use Imported Appearance' and 'Use Custom Appearance' to compare your old Shep with your modified one. I found I had to fiddle with the Eye Colour, Facial Hair, Facial Hair Colour and the Cheek Width settings to get my Shep to look right. Just press 'Back' from the Custom page and keep comparing Imported Shep to Custom Shep until you're happy. I was able to get almost exactly the same (minor difference in the cheeks, but nothing I'll actually notice in-game).
Here's some photos to show you:
My ME1 Imported Character: http://i.imgur.com/e9zpy.jpg
My modified ME2 Character: http://i.imgur.com/kJ5S3.jpg (Close, right?)
(I would suggest taking a photo or screenshot, as you'll need to do more minor editing in ME3)

10. Ok, once you're happy, Copy, Write Down, Tattoo your new facecode in the Custom Appearance page. This is what we will start with in ME3 (again, this isn't going to be 100%).

11. Open ME3, start a new game, get the stupid 'Cannot Import Facecode' error, then use a Custom Appearance. Paste your facecode. Again, Shep won't be exact, but I only (hah!) had to change Nose (it picked a thin instead of thick one, but I was able to match it), Complexion (technically it was the same as my ME2 character, but I feel that the Middle complexion is a closer match, your mileage may vary), Eye Colour, Facial Hair, and Facial Hair Colour to get my Shep back. One thing I noticed is that Eye Colours are not the same in ME2 > ME3. The selection of browns are much lighter, and then suddenly you have black. Not ideal, but even I can handle it, despite being so pedantic.
Here's my ME3 Shepard, for comparison: http://i.imgur.com/teW4w.jpg

12. HOPEFULLY you will recognise YOUR SHEPARD. If you really don't, I'm sorry you went through all this effort without a payoff. As you can see, my results ended up being close enough, but maybe I got lucky.

PLEASE comment and let others know if this works for you.
To summarise:
Original ME1 Shep imported into ME2: http://i.imgur.com/e9zpy.jpg
Fixed ME2 'Custom' Shep: http://i.imgur.com/kJ5S3.jpg
Final ME3 Shep: http://i.imgur.com/teW4w.jpg

Good luck!

I appreciate the post, and that is (more or less) what I did to recreate the image on the right using the Lazarus Reconstruction.

The problem isn't that I can't get the sliders right - it's that the eyes (Eye slider 6, I believe. Maybe 7) are not the same in ME2 as they are in ME1 for me (and thus would not be the same in ME3 if I have to reconstruct).

The left picture in my post is my Shepard directly imported from ME1; the right image is a 'recreated' Shepard using the codes and methods in your post. It's the same eye 'choice', but they don't look the same.

I was just wondering if I messed up on a facial structure slider that's throwing off the eyes, or if the mesh had changed from ME1 to ME2.

Yea, I think the meshes have changed slightly - I wasn't too concerned about the slider positions, but more about what the eye, nose, etc looked like - hence why I used photos. But even then, the closest eyes I could get were close, but just not the same as in ME1/2. Close enough though to not change the character, at least.

the eyes are different because they changed the way facial expressions work. the eyelids look different and are now animated in a different manner.

I don't understand, in the comparison pic which side is which game?

Anyway, they look pretty damn identical if they are indeed from two different games in the series. I don't understand the complaint.

Both screenshots are from ME2, but the:

Left screenshot is the imported character from ME1
Right screenshot is the 'recreated' Shepard using ME2's character creation

You can see the difference in the eyes in the overlay in the bottom right of the picture I posted.
