Actually, the family sword is one of the better 1H swords in the early part of the game (remember you get an additional +1 damage, not to mention the +4 attack bonus). But yeah, it gets obsolete. It's hard to roleplay with the sword when you need to upgrade/replace it to keep pace with the game....

Basically take the toolset -> go to items (right side) -> global -> weapons -> longswords -> unique -> family sword (dont know what its called exactly) -> right click -> check out

then change the material on the left side to weapon-red steel (or smth like that) and lock it in again

start DA:O and tada, it should be red steel

or don't worry about editing the existing blade, I think the longsword type is 2 eh, the one with tha medallion style pommel, just make ya a new one so when you start another human noble origin you can use tha old one. Call it, The Cusland's Vengeance er somethin or other...with a bit of history...perhaps you had it reforged/forged at Ostagar or some such. Also you can do the same for shields....not sure what the Heraldry on it is (maybe it's the grey warden insignia) but technically you could "make" a whole set of goodies to play with.

Here is the tutorial for creating custom items. I've used it and it works well but it is somewhat involved and you do have to follow the steps carefully.

Yes do follow your steps carefully, I had a silly bug that kept spawning 3 heavy warden helmets on every load, despite my script being correct it was the resource name and tag name that were different. I had made an edit to change them from a light helm, tag name kept the light helm tag...took me a while til it dawned on me to change that to match the resource.

Once you have the process down though, it's easy as pie to make custom gear for your entire party and in general I find it more satisfying than the DLC content cause I can make stuff exactly how I'd like it to be...well to the extent of using in-game items as a base model. Happy modding.
