Shapeshifting = Utterly Useless

Its actually really good.
When a mage runs out of mana, then that is a good time to shape change.
Now your a beefy tank that can do good damage aswell.
In the meantime allowing your mana to regen.
Great when you want to conserve your mana potions.

The problem is that a mage really never runs out of mana. I was spamming spells as fast as my cool downs would let me and I think I used less than 10 mana pots the whole game? It was even worse once I became a Blood Mage as blood sacrifice and heal made mana trivial.
Apart from that, the quartermaster in the Circle Tower sells unlimited lyrium dust and the merchant in your tent sells unlimited flasks. Both of these items are cheap and for a few gold you can make hundreds of potions, which is hundreds more than you need.

Apparently we didnt meet the same NPC's in the game. For me it feels more like a mexican standoff whoever gets the first round off wins.

Shapeshifting is excellent if you have plenty of strength, dex, and con... Oh wait, it's a mage.

I think the real problem with Shapeshifting is that it doesn't really advance any side of being a mage. The other three massively ramp up a specific facet of the mage class (either Defence, Offence or Party Support) and as a result all have a big advantage they can call their own, not to mention a nice ability that allows the mage to expand in other areas (armour/weapons for AW, health casting for BM and party godmode for SH). Shapeshifting just seems to be an RP specialisation.

I think that they included shapeshifter because people enjoy playing it so much.
Yes. I am one of those people. Except in this game the shapeshifting is seriously bugged/messed up. See the trailer where Morrigan kills alot of hurlocks and in-game she can't even solo a friking genlock. Some master shapeshifter she is <_<

I downloaded mods for it, they make it nice and strong. I reccomend Val's Shapeshifting or the Learned Shapeshifting Forms mods.
It's a nice class to mod, and eh on its own.
And where would one find these mods? I've been searching for hours.

Seriously! Holy crap! Why couldn't all specializations add at least HALF of that. That would be cool.

I guess to make it really work, you have to do a pure shapeshifting class that really does nothing else but shapeshifting. Then theres no need to balance shapeshifting vs spellcasting. For if you get spellcasting too strong, then nobody ever shapeshifts. But if you get shapeshifting too strong, then nobody ever spellcasts.
A good example was Cernd in BG. Totally useless most of the time, but when he got his greater Werewolf he was, for a short while, the best possible tank. Then the others leveled up and he lost his advantage again and was again completely useless.
I think the best solution is really in D&D3 where you can get spellcasting while shifted, as a feat. Which then turned into the perfect total musthave of Druids ever since. Still I never shapeshifted in D&D3, because it was still useless.
At very least in DA:O shapeshifting gets better with your Magic score, thats really an improvement.

a.) Turn into a spider with two abilities.
b.) Turn into a bear with two abilities.
c.) Turn into a swarm with one ability.
d.) Drink a lyrium potion and chose another spell from a massive arsenal.
Hmmm.... You guys are going to be hard pressed to convince me it's not a waste.

I have a blast changing shape and attacking things as the different forms!
Wait, are you telling me that with mana potions and spell combos you can do way more damage than shape shifting? Really?
Oh, right, this is a story-based role-playing game and I'm not a min-max munchkin. Almost forgot -
I don't care!
Shapeshifting is fun, and it is effective. Is it AS effective as other strategies? Probably not - but I'm having fun with it and that's all that matters to me.
If only using the most effective strategies is fun for you - as in you can't bring yourself to play a 2 dagger rogue because a 2 longsword rogue will be dealing more damage - then you are a different kind of gamer than me, and for you shapeshifting is indeed "useless" compared to being an AW/SH or AW/BM mage. Keep on trucking with the ultimate builds only if that's your cup of tea.
However, if you like challenges, if you like trying different things, and if you like having a character who changes into creatures to attack - then shapeshifting may well be fun for you as well!
