I'm a perfectionist. So I really want to finish this quest WITHOUT any named NPC's dying. I can't seem to avoid having at least one of the three named NPC's die on the lower level in this event, however. The NPC's all stand around mixed together with the zombies so my mage's AoE and CC like cone of cold are difficult to impossible to use safely, and I've tried dropping to Easy, which is supposed to make AoE not hit friendly characters, but apparently that only applies to PARTY members, not friendly NPC's, since a blizzard on easy can and will freeze and kill all the militia (and named characters) along with the zombies.

So what can I do to save EVERY named character in this event? I've tried all four difficulty levels (thinking maybe higher difficulty might beef up the NPC's as well; it might, but they still die quickly under the onslaught). My party is myself (mage), Leliana (archer), Alistair (tank), and Wynne (healer), and I would strongly prefer not to have to change the party makeup. I pause constantly and use dozens of healing and mana potions and have Wynne heal the crap out of the Mayor, Tavernkeeper, and Elf that are down there, but at least one of them always dies. I can finish the event without MY party dying just fine, even on Nightmare. It's keeping the NPC's alive, which my perfectionist nature demands I do, that's driving me insane. Been stuck on this for about 2 weeks. (Not straight, I put the game down for several days at a time because this is frustrating me so much.)

Any tips? I don't want to leave and come back later. I did this second post-Lothering, only having done the mage tower before this, and my party is around level 9. I understand doing this later may be easier, but I sadly did a lot of talking to my party to advance relationships in this town, so going back to a save before I ever went to Redcliffe and choosing a different place to do second would lose me several hours of playtime. I have several (5) skill points to spend with my mage (since I was getting by fine with just cone of cold and bilzzard before this), in case I need to buy specific spells to make this encounter easier. I've tried several spell choices and still can't seem to keep those damned idiot suicidal NPC's alive.

Help!

I did this kind of by accident on my most recent playthrough (Hard, DW Rogue with Zev, Leliana, Alistair). Managed it without any deaths whatsoever.

The easiest way I found was to throw yourself ahead of them. Get out beyond the barricades and turn the zombies into mincemeat out there. Should be easier for you, as you can get Alistair to Taunt outside and have Wynne heal.

The advantage here is that all the Archery practice paid off - Those guys are very handy with their bows, so add quite a bit of damage without being too much at risk.

You've done all the things you can to improve them, right? (Persuade Mayor, get Smith working etc.)

Try taking forcefield on one of your casters to keep at least one of the npcs out of trouble, that should give you a bit more healing power to share between the others. Also taunt as much as possible on Alistair, and of course prioritise targets and throw in as much in the way of cc/stuns/knockbacks against npc-hungry zombies as possible. Could also try making sure all your party are decked out in heavy armor for the innate taunt value, but don't know if that will make a difference in practice.

Dunno why you want to save the tavernkeeper though, the guy's an ass in general, not to mention that he turns up to the battle in casual wear with a pointy stick iirc. ;)
