So how does one beat the Rannoch reaper?  I get that I have to paint the target when its thannix gun is trying to sear me apart, and only when I get the reticle...  but beyond the first volley with it, it becomes impossible!  If I stand there, I can't move laterally fast enough to dodge while painting the target, and if I stop the targeting laser, I have to start painting the target again from scratch!  So how exactly does one beat it?

move closer to the edge of the cliff, target, then move, target, the move, target, and move.keep doing that dont roll, u need to sprint.

ull need to start moving back as the reaper itself moves closer

But.. how does that account for losing all targeting progress from letting off the laser painting?

EDIT: Yeah. not working.  The instance I let up on the laser, gotta start painting all over.

It doesn't start from scratch it just takes time. I found the best way was to double side roll to avoid the laster then target until the next laser begins (double roll the other way this time), rinse and repeat.

Wut?  I'm seeing the indicator HUD thing that pops up start all over every time I let up.

The reaper beam moves in your direction until it gets close to the cliff, then it stays locked in its course. So if you move to the right, the beam also moves to the right. Zag to your left once it gets close to the cliff and it'll miss you by a mile.

You don't start from scratch when you stop painting, but it does slowly reset itself when you aren't painting. Standing still will paint your target faster. and you need to stand still during the last part or else you won't paint the target in time(you'll know its the last part when you see it).

Unless you are experiencing a bug I can confirm it works using my method. It moves inwards slowly each time but it did not start again for me.

I never had to run, then paint, then run, then paint, etc. I would run all the way to one side of the cliff, wait for the beam to get close then sprint to the other side. If you are super accurate, and hit right in the middle of the beam, it only takes a few seconds to hit.

Also, the closer you target to the center of the red eye, the faster the targeting tightens. If you get it dead center, it closes extremely fast.

Oh look, you can kill it with conventional weapons! *facepalm*

But ya I just sat back far as possible, let him try to beam me then run to the side from it then target him.

I hardly call having two combined fleets + Normandy anything resembling 'conventional' when you fire enough hot lead to make another Reaper at anything.

I only had the Quarians firing? It also didn't look like the entire fleet, most of them seemed to be missing if it wasn't for my target designation. In space I assume they could be more accurate. Especially since they're not even the Thanix cannons that the Turians, Humans, Asari and Salarians all have standard now according to the Codex.

Strafe left, roll right. Or vice versa. You have to trick the Reaper into sending the beam one direction, and then just dodge the other way. You don't even have to time it well, you can safely reverse direction just a second or two after the Reaper fires up the beam.

I just roll to the side when it comes close... it looks like it's going to hit but it won't if you roll to the side once it's a few feet in front of you.

All quarian ships, including their civilian class, are equipped with Thanix cannons. You can find this information if you speak to the Quarian admiral on the Normandy and inquire about having civilian ships in the war. You can also read about it in a war asset entry.

The best Quarian frigates also rival the Normandy in technological advances. You can find this information if you read the Galaxy Map entry before docking at the Quarian's main ship. You can also read a war asset entry that says their heavy fleet uses the latest advanced technology in the galaxy, which alludes to the Galaxy Map entry.
