The word crucible is translated into German with "Tiegel/Schmelztiegel"
In Sociology, "Schmelztiegel" concept means you force individual cultures to form a new better united nation. Sounds like the ultimate Reaper indoctrination trap to me as a German. I would be interested what the name of the concept would be in english. If it is crucible, I gonna fall over.

The term commonly used in English is "melting pot", which is a crucible. It means the integration and fusion of many different cultures, typically through immigration, to form a new society. It is usually not described as being "forced" on people.

Actually, looking at Mirriam Webster's definition of crucible, check out 3rd entry

503 error what does it say?

getting one too now, guess we just crashed their server, LOL

basically one of the meanings is a severe, very hard test of patience or faith

MW version:
1:a vessel of a very refractory material (as porcelain) used for melting and calcining a substance that requires a high degree of heat
2: a severe test
3:a place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change or development <conditioned by having grown up within the crucible of Chinatown — Tom Wolfe>

Well in some case, The Crucible is making all alien nations working together. It might not be a weapon after all, but a common purpose which is the key to unite all, even hostile races. And defeating Reapers. That means that, metaphorically, Shepard actually is The Catalyst. O.o

Well, many people have come to the conclusion that Shep is the catalyst, and it would make just so much sense.

All the important named Plot items start with the letter "C".
Could be accidental or coincidence, could be planned because someone loves alliteration.

Crucible
Conduit
Citadel
Collector Base
Commander Shepard
Catalyst
Cerberus

Prothean VI's seem to have naming conventions that hang on the letter "V"
Vigil
Victory
Vandetta
Javik is the avatar of his people for Vengeance.

Just a thing i noticed. Bioware have a thing for naming things with multiple meanings that play with their story significance.
We see this with Cerberus's love for mythology-inherently tied to Pluto and the Relay discovered there.
we see it with the names given to the Reapers, soveriegn/Nazara, and Harbinger.
Siveriegn was they guy who "owned" the citadel, the centre of galactic power, his "throne" (see when he tries to manually power its dormant relay.)

Harbinger-said to be the oldest and most powerful of the reapers. He comes before every other reaper(his design is quite more individual than other Capital classes who are copies of Sovvy)
The codex entry mentions his significance as being basically the Reaper Boss.

Yup, noticed the C-thing too. Probably not that meaningful tho.

Actually, Charon is the name of one of Pluto's moons in real life.  But another example is Cronos Station, where TIM was at.  Cronos was the leader of the titans and Zeus' father.

I have been meaning to ask this for a while, but do you think that there is any reason behind the reoccuring music theme from Mass Effect.

The track in question is called "Vigil" and as the name suggested is the theme played when you meet the prothean VI on Ilos

I could understand replaying themes if they were releated to the character e.g. TIM theme plays whenever you speak to him, but it seems the majoirty of moments with reocurring characters have this "vigil" track as the backing.

The track itself does work as is fairly sombre in tone but I was a little curious about it.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Probably just because it's very emotional and many fans love it. It creates nostalgia, because it was used in ME1's main menu and the Vigil scene which was very memorable. So.. I think they just use it because it works damn well at evoking emotion.

Quoting so this post isn't lost, it seems relevant. Whatever the Godchild is, maybe we've mistaken him for something he isn't.

Also, the archives on mars - and the crucible plans - are discussed by Liara when you meet her on mars and ask. She explains they've known about those parts of the archives for years, but that it takes a great amount of time to comb through, iirc. You are talking about massive amounts of information stored on what is essentially a much more advanced computer from a nearly mythical civilization.

Yeah.. it just seems very casual that they found the plans just now, and that it's apparently a perfect superweapon aimed at the reapers... but then again: :wizard: Space Magic! Space Magic for everybody!

I love how Shepard gets a line that basically calls out the convenience of the plot device.. "I'll believe it when I see it"

No, please god no,

If Shep is the catalyst I can see the story ending one way. Where Shepard must die in order to save the galaxy. It's far to messianic.

I have stated this before, but I don't mind Shep dying as a result of saving the galaxy(like in an explosion) but if he/she has to die in order to save the galaxy I would be disappointed. In fact when I read about the bad endings that is what I assumed it would be.

I trust Bioware so I really hope they don't go with cliche 101 on this.

Yeah.. it IS implied in the game that this is all just a little much coincidence.. so maybe...

Or, seeing as a catalyst can not be destroyed in a reaction, maybe Shepard will be forced to live on forever, Revan-style? Just putting ideas out there.

Huh.. don't think I'd like that. That's even worse than dying. It could imply that Shep will survive the whole thing though.

Well if it is the main theme for Mass Effect that would explain it, nostalgia as you say.

At some point I will find something interesting to add

Shep is already half synthetic, if it is really Reapertech, he maybe won't get older already. But I really don't think something spacemagic style will happen again. IF the crucible is really working I hope, it will affect the Reaper somehow harmless. Deactivate them for a while, hack them, something possible like that. I really don't need a FTL wave again which will destroy all Reapers in the universe. It made no sense in the current ending and it won't make any sense in future -.-

So I just started replaying Mass Effect (1) and there is something I noticed after the Eden Prime mission. There are Whispers! When Shepard talks to Chakwas about the vision he received from the Prothean beacon, you can clearly hear it in the background!

www.youtube.com/watch

Perhaps it is major strawgrasping, but I found it interesting nonetheless! :)

Edit: Inserted the right link and by the way, the whispers get broken up by none other then Anderson!

I really think it would be convenient for Bioware to keep the Reapers alive. Delay them, temporarily disable them, but destroy them and you lose a very interesting enemy. They'd have to think of something else for sequels/prequels, but they couldn't just pull another "evil robot"-plot.

Vacation time and the like are allocated months in advance. You don't cancel people's vacation time based on reception of a product. If they did that, I'm pretty sure they'd be breaking Canadian labor laws.

Don't know about Canada, but you could do it in Germany (extraordinary needs of the company allow suspensions of workers' holiday plans) and our labor laws are known to be rather strict.
