I guess we will never know for sure unless the story writers come out and give us the blueprint.
That a kid is at an alliance base wouldn't be too much of a stretch though. A lot of military families seems to bring their kids along. Ashley mentioned that her mother used to bring her to the base when her father was leaving on duty, so it could be along those lines.
I find it hard to believe that the kid isn't real at the begining. But the kid hiding in the vents and boarding the shuttle that is shut down is an illusion (at least according to my brain atm)
What would be really interesting would be if you saw the kid later (after the final ending) with his parents, alive and well. Confirming the theory that he was indeed there, just not after the opening intro scene.
You know, I would like for someone with especially good spatial awareness to analyze just exactly what direction that grassy rooftop area is with regard to where you come out of the audience chamber with Anderson. Might take a lot of going over the camera angles and which way everybody's walking in those hallways and what not. But that building that gets blasted with the kid inside, where you shoot the husks and run out of ammo:mellow:, has no grassy rooftop area visible. When you turn the corner and look down, he's just standing at the glass wall all calm as can be. How'd the little blighter get there?
With some analysis of the building and its immediate surroundings, we could discern whether the kid running into the soon-to-be blasted building is real or already a figment of poor Shepard's terror-fueled imagination.

The kid must've been real at some point, you see a picture of him on the memorial wall in the refugee area of the Citadel. But I too believe that the only time he was real was at the very beginning.
I'm not 100% convinced that the picture proves anything. Like mentioned a few pages back, Shep might see the picture.
I think that if he/she did, wouldn't he/she contact the ones who had reported him lost to say that he lost his life during a shuttle escape?

Although I think going into the mechanics of the alliance facility is a bit far-fetched, I welcome your passion and attention to detail!

Y'know.. there's six months of time that is unaccounted for while Shepard is on Earth, maybe the kid was real before the beginning? Just tossing random ideas out.
Seeing as Shepards "cell" window was pointing stright at the grassy area, it's not that far of a stretch to think that the kid has been playing there more times than just that day.

THAT would have made for a great bit of side-questery, and still would have fit in with the nightmares! Maybe made them even better!
It's not just a letter to the relatives of fallen comrades ('just' used very loosely; see Tali's Shadow Broker files
Delicious.

It's like from the start this model main purpose is not to be a child.
But once again maybe I'm overthinking it.

It's not just a letter to the relatives of fallen comrades ('just' used very loosely; see Tali's Shadow Broker files), it's a letter, or hell, an in-person visit, to the parents of a kid you thought might possibly have escaped, albeit into an electric death vent but never mind that, but then saw shot to hell by a reaper as you made your own getaway.
Delicious.
Yeah, indeed. Renegade Shep would beat the parents up for letting a kid on an alliance base, while Paragon Shep would beat him/her self up about being unable to save him. I doubt Bioware would have missed the opportunity to do this if it's not tied to the ending dlc we all hope to see.

I see the picture as a simple easter egg or a very mind meddling easter egg. But the fact that it is there, distinguishing itself by not being multiple times on the walls and being right in front, like on a special place seems to be very odd.
I know, that's mostly veeeery much grasping at emergency induction ports, but that's how it looks to me.

ugh... You should know enough about indoctrination now to know how it works.. Resist! You can dooo it!
Unrelated again: umm.. about to hit Cerberus base with 80% ems.. roughly 5,500 out of 6,900.. anyone know how much it takes to get the last breath earth survives ending? Don't want to go into it unprepared but really don't want to play MP lol.

You will be perfectly fine, you neither have to talk TIM out of shooting Anderson, nor shoot TIM yourself. Though why you wouldn't save Anderson is just.. well.. what's wrong with you!?

Another interesting strategy was if the "real" ending was available once the gamers of the world get over one million EMS or something like that.
Oooohhhhh..... WE NEED TO PLAY MULTIPLAYER!!!
Everybody, go!!!!
I'm way ahead of you guys, N7 rating 240 or so now
PS: Those images of Liara and Shepards babies hit me right straight through the heart. I really hope they have those little blue babies somewhere in the game some day.

Maybe... Or maybe Shep is the only one who sees that picture, too. And if there are 6-7 scenes of the young girl talking to the Turian C-Sec officer in the refugee area, talking about her parents etc... Why aren't we shown who puts that pic up? Why does Allers have a copy of all the pictures except for the kaboom-boy? Why don't we see anyone looking at that picture in the holding area looking sad? Why not include a scene with Garrus (who he told about the kid) looking at the picture and dealing with Sheps pain more?
If the kid was real, something involving his family confronting Shep, or Shep having to break the news of his blowing up to them seems like an easy inclusion to drive the point home and pluck the heart strings of the player. Those moments in the game, with the suicidal Asari, the mother wanting to get her Daughter to Thessia before shipping out, the father who just wanted to know what happened to his son... Shep sees and deals with these random characters... But with the kid? It's never TRULY explored.
Bioware (despite the current furore) have excellent writers. It strikes me that the only way they miss that kind of beat is if they deliberately avoid it.
If you check out one of the recent Bioware blogs, they interview the guy who wrote the Tuchanka/Genophage missions and Mordin's demise. Reading the level of care and consideration put into that part of the game, I find it difficult to fathom them not milking that kid and the emotional impact more than they did.
For me, that kid was not real. It was in Shep's head.
Edit: Also, the kid plays with an Alliance fighter at the start, same as the girl in the Trailer did. It isn't a toy/model Normandy. No sir.

I'd like to see it as them preserving organics because they need them to survive themselves.. It's like fuel to a car or something.... That would put them back in the book of being most evil and menacing.. instead of babysitters.

Otherwise, we wouldn't even be here discussing it at such length, heh.

Yes. I have to believe that if that one strangely unique picture is real, there would have been something to do with it. Alas, earwax.
