I don't believe it. You can argue all you want that it makes sense from a story perspective for the ending to be a dream, and I will even agree with you.

I however do not believe Bioware would be stupid enough to do this without having a more explicit hint (other than things not making sense) about it. In fact, the post-credits epilogue gives me the impression that it wasn't a dream.

I could make sense if it was a dream. They might even take that approach based on the backlash. But I cannot believe it was their original intent.

Well exactly. But I'm of the mind it would be a great starting point for an expansion. And if nothing like that ever happens... well at least this fan theory makes the ending suck less.

After reading the 1st page of this post-I'm not completely convinced of all the details-but I think you guys/gals have the gist of it.

If it is the case, even loosely, FFS it's a ballsy move if I've ever seen one.

And if they can actually pull it off.......Talk about a total mind frak-they had me fooled for a bit at least.

This goes back to the very issue of: hallucination does not excuse poor writing, or storytelling in general.

Yes, these things are all hints that I'm glad people picked up on, and even then they might not mean anything other than poor writing, but I think that if so many people missed them...I dunno. I don't feel that's us not being smart enough, I feel that's them failing to make their story accessible.

For the most part, I don't know that many people who like this idea really care if it was their idea or not. It makes more sense the the current endings by far, and if they do end up implementing something like this, who cares if this is true or not. As long as it gets done.

Still doubtful they will do it, though.

I would love for the hallucination thing to be true. There's just one problem I see with it regarding future DLC from a continuation/technical point of view.

Saves.

After the credits you're back on the Normandy before you attack TIM's hideout. If you check your hours played when you resave, it basically just takes you back in time. So I'm not even sure if the game "knows" if you beat the game or not.

I've also heard from Casey Hudson many times in the past not being concerned with contiuation in ME3.

Maybe someone that's a bit more computer savvy than me can chime in on this? Does the game know you beat it and what ending path you took even if it doesn't show it in your saves?

Well there is a new game plus so I'm sure it know you won.

Additionally you can just load the "Restart Mission" save and go back to the beginning of the most recent mission.

How do you think the NG+ works?

Doesn't DA:O also do the same thing? And when you import it to DA2, you get to pick at what point you want it imported and that's when you can see the final save.

Also, when you import a ME3 character, it will tell you when your last save was (date), and in my case I did the Cerberus base on one day and ended the game on the next day (technically, because it was past midnight) and the game said that the last save was on the day I played the final part, so...it just won't let you load there, but it is there.

Just pointing out something I mentioned that got lost a few pages back, in every previous dream Shepard has throughout the game, the child is adamantly running away from Shepard. The child does not want Shepard to catch them until the final dream where they embrace. Which ends in the two of you BURNING TOGETHER.

There is an -insidious- look on Phantom Shepard's face as they hug the child and an ominous tone in the BG music as well. Foreshadowing

I support this theory. It makes sense of the Shepard breath scene and many other details. I have to agree that if it turns out to be true and they are just waiting until it's out across the globe before they give us the truth then bravo...

I actually haven't tried this, but if I make a new character in ME3 and import the Shepard that beat the game, his weapons will carry over? And that's how I'll know?

Remember it is always stressed that indoctrination is a subtle process where the victim does not realize they are being indoctrinated. If Bioware is still this good, and this theory is anything to go by, I think they may have just created something amazing. I mean the final sequence the kid pretty much portrays Anderson in red (renegade) and the Illusive man in blue (paragon), which we all know is the entire opposite of what they represent in the game. And also the way he tries to dissuade Shepard from using the destroy option by basically holding the Geth and EDI hostage (saying they will be destroyed as well) and saying that even Shepard is part synthetic (and Shepard survived). The indoctrination wasn't just meant for Shepard, it was meant for the player as well. I don't know, it just makes too much sense now.

*snip*

[Insert Shepard Husk-looking pictures here]

Honestly, when the spoiler about the ending came out (before the game came out) on 4chan and I read that you could become a reaper or control it, I thought "wtf are they talking about?! We have to kill them no matter what! Wouldn't that mean that the reapers won? "

Guess...we get to pick if we wanna become a husk ;)

Do remember that because of the events of Mass Effect 2, Shepard had to be largely rebuilt from scratch. So these pictures could appear to be revealing Shepard being turned into a husk, or it could also simply be the synthetic skin atop his/her body disintegrating. While they kept most of his/her basic structure I do believe much of the body had to be artificially reconstructed using synthetic parts. While I don't know if this would extend to the entire muscle system of the human body, I'd be more suprised by anything remaining intact following an atmospheric reentry in nothing but military-grade combat armor. We know that core components of the body did survive including the brain and heart so its not easy to say.

Sorry, I'm new to the topic and I don't mean to dash any hopes, just trying to keep things in perspective. :(

Honestly...I'm almost begging for all of this to be speculation because it would demonstrate that the fans can come up with a more worthwhile ending than the writers :P

Dang Harbinger sucks at writing endings, too bad he assimilated the actual ME3 writers while you were storming london.

Well this won't be the first one. Remember Matrix? Fan explanations made more sense than the official one.

At the end of the game, when the three choices are presented to you... Control is on the left. Destroy is on the right.

The entire area, including the area behind Shepard, resembles a large dialog wheel. In comparison, control is the "top" (paragon) dialog slot, merge the "center" (neutral), and destroy the "bottom" (renegade).

And, in console versions the opposite is true. Renegade interrupts are done by right trigger, paragon by left trigger.

The whole sequence is a lie to try and steer you away from destroying the reapers, the goal for the whole game has always been destroy the reapers, not lets work it out with the reapers. Control and sythesis both imply that you meld minds or give in to the reapers intentions, thus indoctrination. you must stand strong to kill those bastards no matter what.

Everything in that scene is a lie, thats why it feels "wrong" to most of us.

Actually, in all honesty, no. I walked out of the theater after The Matrix Revolutions and never gave the series a second glance :P

random babble- in case people are questioning when exactly Shep gets indoctrinated-- I keep thinking that it could perhaps have started from the Arrival DLC- when the Reaper Artifact reveals to Shep the vision-- maybe the indoctrination could have begun there? if not a whole lot sooner

Will point this out again. The two discs you get for the PC version. Disc 2 is 6.08 gigs
Disc one is 7.81 gigs Essentially adds up to 14gigs if you include Origin. Now, Looking at the ME3 file on my computer I have a file that is 11 gigs in size. There are 3 gigabytes of information left on those discs.

Also, the amount of memory that the case says is required is 15 gigs. Something is suspicious here. very suspicious.

The extra space could be redundancy for faster file reading and shorter load times, OR it could be encrypted ending content that unlocks with a code hidden in the patch we will no doubt get after the game launches world wide.

We shall see!

I believe the game records that your 'Career' beat the game but I do believe if you were to save immediatly after loading back in onto the Normandy your 'timed played' is as if you never did anything past TIM's base. I could be wrong on the time played tracking but it does look like what I saw when comparing saves after I beat the game.

You are correct on the time saved thing my friend, I noticed that today when going through that save it has 25.37 on it (the save after I beat the game) then a save i have in London has 27.50 so it puts your time played in reverse.

I agree this is possible, but I feel that the Prothean VI on Thessia would have pointed it out...

...unless Shepard wasn't fully indoctrinated by that point, only being subtely influenced up until the end when Harby actually plops down on Earth. I think *that* is the culmination of the indoctrination effort, but it may have been going on for some time in small doses.

Weapons, upgrades, powers, level, credits, fish, models, reputation(paragon/renegade)... pretty much everything except war asset.
And you will get a new achievement for importing a ME3 character.

The sad thing is that the ME3 'epilogue' blatantly takes some cues from the Matrix 3 ending.
