Oh God. I just realized another interpretation of the ending. One that's even worse. I haven't read the hundreds of pages of understandable rage, so forgive me if this has been mentioned before.
The Reapers won. That wasn't just a hallucination, it was a hallucination as Shepard died. He got hit by Harbinger's beam. That thing can bring down a dreadnought, nobody is going to survive it on foot. The reasons to think it's a hallucination are numerous but in hindsight it also seems highly unlikely he survived at all. You can hear people saying things in the distance along the lines of "My God, they're all dead." Which you would expect because, again, Harbinger's beam weapon!
What really makes me think this though is the grandfather scene at the end. We only see them as silhouettes at a far distance. We thought it didn't make much sense because they talk as if there's no aliens on the planet, they have no space travel, ect. ... That's because they don't. They're not human, or any other species we know of. They're a species in a future cycle that hasn't yet developed space travel. They know of this legend of Shepard because they found one of Liara's time capsules that she filled with adoration for her friend. And that's why we can't see them clearly, to hide that these are a future species and not our own.
I find myself thinking something I never thought I'd think. Dear God, retcon please!
Just check wiki for near death exerience... crap, a lot of things matched, especially the spacekid part
the shepard alive ending can be explained as he recover from near death

- An out-of-body experience. A perception of one's body from an outside position.
- A "tunnel experience". A sense of moving up, or through, a passageway or staircase.
- A rapid movement toward and/or sudden immersion in a powerful light. Communication with the light
- An intense feeling of unconditional love
- Encountering "Beings of Light", "Beings dressed in white", or similar. Also, the possibility of being reunited with deceased loved ones
- Receiving a life review
- Receiving a "life preview"
- Receiving knowledge about one's life and the nature of the universe
- A decision by oneself or others to return to one's body, often accompanied by a reluctance to return
- Approaching a border
- The notice of unpleasant sound or noise
- Connection to the cultural beliefs held by the individual, which seem to dictate the phenomena experienced in the NDE and the later interpretation thereof
