It's one thing I loved in the beginning of ME3, picking out a gift for Ashley, first time around I bought it all, figuring I could just bury her in chocolates, roses and her favorite poets, then I discovered  you only get to give her one, so I had to figure out the perfect gift.

The complete Tennyson.

She was surprised I remembered.

I totally missed the gift terminal my first time through the game. :pinched:

There is a gift terminal?? what the.... where?

It's the same terminal that you later purchase the medi-gel capacity upgrades from. The gifts are only available the first couple of times you visit the hospital.

The one in the hospital? ive visited that, I thought there was another one that I missed :@

Also, Arian, I'm glad that I'm one of those few lawyers you do actually like! yay.

Indeed.

Also, since we seem to moving slow right now, why not discuss some of the lesser things from my post? We touched on BNW and EA's buisness plan, but some of the smaller stuff I haven't seen much discussion on. Either that or we can go back to a discussion of the Reaper's motives again...

Can it wait a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations.

Actually, I'd be happy to, but I think I'm going to grab a quick nap before I need to make some phone calls in a bit. I'll be back later.

Bleh... trying to not take a few hours of sack time... I'll only fall behind again and have to catch up.... then the moment will have passed...but I got to.. and got so much work to finish in the morning... a big ass essay for philosophy, a paper on Diogenes of Sinope, finishing off that glorified book report that is my linguistics paper... doing all that ****ing shading on a still life... ugh. OH and to cap it off, an Anthropology take-home test.

No rest for the wicked eh?

Hmm. Maybe. Let's try a test shall we. There's only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Don't get it: Geek cred ruined.
Laughed: Geek cred in tact.
Didn't laugh because it's so old: Congrats on your new VIP geek cred.

Am I the only one who (mostly) read's Arian's posts?
Since he always catches up on everyone's posts and has something to say about the major ones, I find them good for getting a quick summary of what's been discussed lately.

Hell, I stopped doing posts like that because it got a near global tl;dr. =/

Batarian squadmate would be interesting, but I'd prefer a krogan squadmates since this is the only ME game we don't get one.

Agreed. I can't believe we didn't get a krogan squad member. Pass on the batarian though. I've already got one four-eyed sociopath I want to feed to a thresher maw.

Personally, I will admit, I really do like the idea of Saren, rebuilt by the Reapers, turned into a monster, both as a stab against Shepard and as an effective, semi autonomous unit, eventually going rogue and joining the man who killed him. It strikes me as pogniant.

Wait, what? Saren back, as a squad member in 3? Who suggested that? Did I miss something?
My only problem with it is the lack of believability in his return. The why and how of his return would be really bad. But aside from that I like the concept of the old villain as begrudged ally. Reminds me of Throne of Bhaal. Both Sarevok and as I recall there was an excellent mod that had Irenicus redeemable. Or not redeemable, depending on your choices.

Speaking of possible squad members, I recall in one of the interviews that they were saying how much work it was to design dialogue for all of the squad. And they gave a number. 12. That's... not even close to what we got. We're four short. Were they talking about people on the Normandy who don't go on missions, like Joker and such? Seems like that's way too many in the opposite direction. Joker, Dr. Chakwas, Dr. Michel, Engineers Adams, Donnelly, and Daniels, Allers, Cortez, Traynor, and all the temporaries like Legion, Wrex, Mordin... So they were planning on 4 more real squad members? Who were they going to be? Why were they cut? And why wasn't Javik cut?

That is fine.

I originally chose destroy, because, well, screw AI. Then I replayed the end and tried the other two endings for completions sake. I was actually thinking of writing a big ol' rage post, but this makes me feel good.

It also makes me feel like my belief in BW games is justified.

My only real complaint is that if this is indoctrination then why does the game end if you fight it and win, only to awake and breath? I guess they'd solve it via DLC?

@ HellishFiend

Thanx for the welcome. ^_^

Forgive me if it has already been said, I am a bit slow on catching up with 1810 posts ;P, I also noticed couple of things when replaying the end sequence:

First of all, the fact that you see your LI only at the end of Destroy choice (Samantha Traynor in my case) standing beside Joker. Might be just an artistic choice, but looks like it has been done on purpose to me, representing return to reality and thinking of people who are very special.
You can see a glipse of your LI in Synthesis choice, but again, following the Indocrination theory it's just a projective of delusional mind, who convinces itself that the futire goes all utopian.

Secondly, it looks like even the title of the last game chapter "The Return" might have double meaning. The Return from the dream/halucination maybe? Just a thought.

I know I am late for the party but I've only finished my first playthough yesterday late evening and I must say... the game is epic and the fact that the ending is so controverisal makes it even greater!

Lets get things straight, the controversial response to the ending is because of ME1 and ME2.
Without those ME3 as a standalone would just be another arcade shooter (alas a good one with some good story elements), but nothing unique.

Also, its the lack of ending that makes it so controversial.

I think it best can be described as the last page in the Lord of the Rings being written:
"Frodo drops the ring in a vulcano, Sauron's forces are defeated/controled by frodo/joins gandalf."

After reading this deep and intricate book, you would not be happy with an ending like that.

I personally think that Javik is not that big jerk... When we consider that he was born and has grown with the idea that the Prothean Empire was the greatest and when war was raging and reaching its (bad) end. No time for philosophical or ethical questions... A kind of black and white world...
All he was doing was fighting and killing. He never has had the chance to travel in a safe context and learn about the others, to questions his own beliefs. Yet he wakes up 50,000 years later, where all "the primitives" of his time has evolved and rule the galaxy (in quite different way though). All of this is new for him, so it's IMO normal that he at first feels a little bit superior to them and dismiss their way of thinking...
But he seems to evolve all along the journey, learning to more open-minded, even considering in the end a journey with Liara who he was only naming by "Asari"...
His dialogue-lines on Sur'Kesh were hilarious and I liked his rasta- accent :D.. So along with EDI I find him quite well done, comparing to Vega or Cortez...

I couldn't agree with your post more.

Javik really didn't have any time in his life to question anything, so I understand the way he is.
plus, I love how he PWNS Wreav in the Sur'kesh mission! :D

In Arians post I noticed the bit about the sound or better voiceover when opening the Citadel and remembered it always was odd to me. The coughing and what Shep said were at the same time, making the scene seem unreal as in either the coughing or the talking is only in Sheps head;
Now it's a question if Shep was starting to wake up which would mean the Guardian would be real, or, more interesting imo, until that point it might have been real, but blurred by pain and indoctrination, and everything with the Guardian is only in Sheps head.

I couldn't just kill him) so I don't know how was the dialogue Javik-Wreav (makes want to do another big playthrough, but for now I'll wait till the DLC EC comes out), but I'll take your word for it :) !! The dialogue between Javik and Wreav goes kinda like this:

Javik: Pride is not a strength. It is a weakness. I learned that in my cycle.

Wreav: Oh yeah? Well how many of your kind are still alive today, huh?

Javik: enough to kill you.

I just kept on thinking "BUUURRRRNEEED" During the whole mission when I heard Wreav's voice.

He's a hateful, self-righteous hypocrite with a superior complex that they could write entire psychiatric journals about. Honestly, if he's an accurate representation of the Protheans then they deserved what the Reapers did to them. Let's consider:

- They believed evolution was the only force in the universe that truly mattered.
- They were not against artifical evolution as shown by their genetic engineering of the asari.
- They felt that "those who had nothing to offer were to be eliminated" by the natural order of things.
- They enslaved the weaker races and used the logic of "they're free to challenge us" to justify it.

The way I see it, the Reapers beat them at their own game using their own rules. The Protheans had nothing to offer the Reaper civilization, that's for certain. The Reapers' own artifical evolution is justified by Prothean standard. So the Reapers challenged them, and enslaved them as the Collectors. Those who had nothing to offer were eliminated. I so wish I had an option for Shepard to ram this down Javik's throat. Along with the barrel of a falcon but let's not get into that. Yet.

Anyway, I don't see Javik as having learned a damned thing by the end. Near the end of the game I found in the AI Core arguing with EDI. The four-eyed troll actually went to the AI core just to tell EDI all about how he thinks she's inherently terrible. That's the only time in two games I've heard anger in EDI's voice. Naturally, he also says to throw Legion out the airlock. Just like another piece of garbage does. Shepard can even appeal to Javik's usually pragmatic point of view: the geth are willing to fight the Reapers, he should at least work with them on that. And this is why I call that vermin a hypocrite: he tosses out his usual pragmatic approach and sticks to the "throw the machine that's proven loyal out the airlock because the Collector who hasn't proven anything says so".

He calls Liara by her name by the end? Yeah. That's not much of a step forward, especially when you consider why he's doing it. Have you ever gone to the Collector's room after Thessia? Right after it? He's getting into it with Liara and being his usual antagonistic self about Liara having just found out the Protheans were playing God with her ancestors as she watched the Reapers brutally lay waste to her homeland. And there we have Liara, a usually peaceful and sympathetic lady, on verge of squashing that bug. Gee, I'm sensing a pattern here. Anyway, my point is, he's calling Liara by her name because of that conversation. He's basically humoring her so she doesn't lose it and stays in fighting condition for the Reapers. Don't believe me? Ask him yourself in that conversation. He's telling her what she wants to her. Yes, he's going to "write a book" with her. Probably not humoring her on that. I'm sure it won't be at all what she expects though. Remember the Prothean language guide he gave Traynor? "For subservient races"? Charming cultural clue indeed.

If there was a prothean worth saving, it was not this maggot.

Edit: Separated paragraphs for easier reading.  Was longer than I thought.

Hmmm, I agree that the Protheans would have had to be exterminated by another species in order for a new era to begin - it just happens it was the Reapers who did it.

What I don´t get is why everyone thinks those shadows around Shepard when TIM controls you is evidence for the indoctrination theory? The Illusive Man himself IS indoctrinating you/controlling you, or did I misunderstand that whole scene?

ME3 makes a BIG point to say there are no mind control chips in Shepard, and indoctrination isn't mind control, it's just a swayed way of thinking. At least when I played that section I didn't understand how TIM was controlling Shep and Anderson.
