You know it actually sounds reasonable. I was confused with the odd way the story suddenly changed. It just didn't seem like top notch bioware writing. Too many questions. Too many things that Bioware just wouldn't normally do.

Now that I've been reading up on the Indoctrination Theory it seems to me like it's the answer or close to it. Right now I think that the final sequence is merely a test of sorts and we will deal with the consequences of our choice in an upcoming DLC.

Choosing destroy with a lot of EMS shows us the gasp for air scene with rubble that looks suspiciously like it belongs on Earth. Destroying the Reapers in that 'test' broke us out of the hallucination/mind trap/whatever.

Only question is where the sequence started. It's hard to tell how Shep's armour looks like in that 2 second clip but it does appear very similar to charred post-Harby-beam-hit style.

The cryptic dev tweets really fit into this idea since they haven't said anything concrete. They are waiting for more people to beat the game before making the announcement. I don't know if this DLC will be free or not but if it is then this will have been quite the genius move.

The plot holes showcased by Normandy's crash and party members appearing must be a deliberate sign to help us realize something's not right. I'm not sure but isn't one of your two party members you take with you on Earth always in that scene?

I suspect we'll get our boss fight with the Reapers after all...

Still all pure speculation until more time passes and we get some official and conclusive word from Bioware. But right now, I think a lot of signs point to this idea.

Something on when Shepard was exposed to indoctrination. It was established in the comics that there were Reaper artifacts that would huskify and indoctrinate people who touched them, and give a flash of visions and a mild case of indoctrination from weaker exposure (such as grabbing someone who got zapped by an artifact). That is how both Saren and TIM both were originally indoctrinated (and by the same artifact at that). In Arrival, we saw Shepard locked in a room with a giant reaper artifact that he immediately knew was indoctrinating everyone, and me3 and all the stuff with the kid and nightmares starts not too long afterwards. Also, in the comics they describe what happened to the turians that got turned into husks as evolving and that they had evolved into the peak form of their race. So essentially they were achieving synthesis. So the synthesis ending means turning everyone into a husk.

I don't know if anyone pointed this out, but if there was a part about a mild case of indoctrination, wouldn't Shepard's case had started in the first Mass Effect because Saren grabbed them by the throat on Virmire when you face him?

This is my theory about what happens (apologies if someone has stated this before. If you believe the indoctrination theory. What you see in the end is Shepard breathing or dead. Either way his story ends here as the protagonist. He wont get up anytime soon.

What then happens is me4. A new protagonist starts off going into the citadel and finishing the reapers off. Celebrations ensue where you're shepard is a crippled living legend/statue. However you're new protagonist realises that something deeper stirs in space hence a new trilogy begins using another protagonist.

Bioware gets a new trilogy, an artistic ending where Shepard isn't a failure as he managed to unite the galaxy but being only "human" could not do everything. He laid the ground work through his decisions. However bioware can continue the universe with a new protagonist and a new squad.

Either way bioware stated Shepard story ends here.

My thoughts exactly. They want to do a ME4, (Though I heard that might be a MMO) and they are going to need a new protagonist. And who could fill shepards place better than, 'The one who kills the reapers.'

Whether the new protagonist is introduced in ME4 or a DLC is another question.

Would be a smart move on their part.
