Casey has been the showrunner since the beginning. And it is a game about choices. That's why the ending is a climactic choice. It doesn't negate the relationships you've formed, it doesn't negate what you've done for numerous individuals and civilizations, and it doesn't negate the impact Shepard had on the galaxy. But it isn't a choose your own adventure novel. They kept a certain narrative framework that your choices were able to partially mold. That's how they told such a good story.
From what I've read in this place, and many others, is that these are not the endings we were supposed to get.

Interesting. I'm very glad they changed it to a choice that was beyond paragon or renegade, a truly difficult choice. No one would have allied with the Reapers to stop dark energy from spreading and people would be complaining about the ending being another "no-brainer" choice in a game that is supposed to be about hard choices. Also, the supposed original ending doesn't really fit with Shepard's past conversations with Reapers. "Ascension through destruction" fits much more with the true ending.
Anyway, it seems as though they deliberately changed it to something that they felt was better and fit more with the other games, and I would have to agree with their choice.
