What was wrong with Return of the Jedi's ending?

Not sure. It did everything it was supposed to thematically. Only thing I really didn't like was the Ewoks defeating the Emperor's "best troops". But that aside, my focus was on Luke vs. Vader anyway.

To be fair, they were getting their furry little asses kicked before Chewbacca hijacked a walker.

Anyway, there should've been a choice to it. If you were Paragon, did all the right moves, got all the right allies. you should've gotten a Return of the Jedi ending if you wanted it.

If you were Renegade, made all the right choices in that one, you could've gotten a (going with the Star Wars theme) Revenge of the Sith sort of ending, with humans being in full control of the galaxy and maybe Cerberus replacing the Alliance or something like that.

And every possibility in between (including a worst-case-scenario where the Reapers win).

I like PiEman's alternatives. I didn't hate the endings, but something like PiE's would really have made more sense since a lot of what Mass Effect has been about is "Are you Renegade, Paragon, or something in between?" The ending don't reflect that, not discernably at least.

Thanks :D
Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, basically.

Agreed, some reactions are extreme.
Mine isn't so much directed against the ending though. It's directed against Bioware ignoring the fact that I paid money to get a certain kind of game - where decisions influence the story - but not giving me that.

Agreed.

5 years of shep, to be ruined by 10 minutes. All of our choices, meaningless. Thank you bioware for the ****tacular ending.

Heck I'm still waiting to when their going to announce the date of their mistake with Deception. I guess that won't happen either. Its been a great ride Bioware but, I may have to go.

....they already did. They said they're going to fix the book.

This is the one time I would've preferred my own quote thingy I made up for "Leviathan" the hypothetical lead Reaper:

"For an eternity, we watched, we waited, we sewed. We reaped. For an eternity we thought ourselves immortal. For an eternity, we thought ourselves gods. Until now, we were right. As
the darkness gathers, as I am consumed in the dark end of mortality, as
I watch my comrades torn to pieces by their own ignorance, I can not
help but sense a great sadness dwelling within my core. The irony of our end is immense and crushing. These
bacteria, these small, fragile accidents of nature, these organics, rip
and blow us apart with their primitive weapons of rock. They are truly the vanguards of our destruction. They existed because we allowed it, and now we end, because they demand it."

A bit cheesy, but it's pretty epic when you imagine it. Way better than what we got, anyway.

Do yourself a favour and stop playing the game before the final mission; wait for an ending patch, because it's terrible and will make you hate Mass Effect, BioWare, and your life.

Umm... no. You see, while i don't like the endings for probably the same reasons as you, i see the point, and i respect the opinion of those who brought this universe forth in the first place.

If you haven't played the last mission yet, play it, finish the game and draw your own conclusions rather then let someone else's opinion dictate yours. You're not Reapers, after all.

So, just for those keeping track of endings:

Final Fantasy VI (released 1994)

- 16-bit
- 10 different characters involved in the ending (to say nothing of the rest of the planet shown during the ending montage)
- ending that ran a good 15-20 minutes easy
- an ending that can be completed with as few as three characters or as many as all of them
- gives every character a moment to shine
- can be various levels of "complete" based on how many squadmates you recruited (or saved) over the course of the game
- had a definite air of finality to it, but also a strong message of hope and rebuilding
- didn't rely on a deus ex machina, but the organic culmination of the enemy's and the main cast's growth over the game (the squadmates all help each other as they escape)
- 2 secret characters you didn't have to pay for

Game.

Mass Effect 3 (released 2012)

- next-gen
- relies on a deus ex machina introduced from nowhere to resolve the plot
- 7 squadmates (almost all of whom disappear during the ending)
- an ending that doesn't really require much effort to get - just play the main plot, and you'll have enough assets to get most of the endings
- your choices don't matter
- the main character rolls over and lets a machine god (who's spouting blatant misinformation, depending on your choices) tell him/her what to do
- ending runs five minutes
- no closure on what happened to almost everyone in the universe
- large swaths of the plot are rendered pointless due to the circumstances the galaxy finds itself in
- one of three endings relies on glorified space magic
- your decisions throughout the first two games have no bearing on the final decision

Set.

End of line.

Match.

No no, people should of finish the game and experience these terrible endings. Then and only then they can give the right feedback to Bioware.

*No Spoilers* please!

I reloaded to do an additional mission so I could get a paragon resolution. The alternative was just too tragic.

Nah.

No, seriously. I'm not trolling here. Don't play the ending, you will never want to replay this game or any Mass Effect game again. Just some friendly advice from someone who underestimated how bad the ending was.

Here's advice from a guy who saw the ending and enjoyed the ride.

Get over it.

+1
People seem to want an ending where Sheperd and LI ride into the sunset on top of a flying theresermaw....

Get real.
