Sorry, if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find any answers that would make me feel certain.

I wonder how do you know that Leliana is hardened? Is there some special achievement pop up or something? I said the lines, that have been said to do the trick or atleast similiar ones, but I remain uncertain I didn't notice any ''drastic'' changes in her after the personal quest.

Thanks in advance! :wizard:

well...how do I explain it simply... if it's cold outside you should be able to look at her and notice a difference.

She has a slightly different tone of voice for her greeting, if I am not mistaken. She also reacts a bit differently, and doesn't mind your religious pokes.

What does 'hardened" mean?

(Let's skip the juvenile jokes - you all know what the question is about...)

Well she controls her feelings better when she is hardened. It's like people who get hardened by rough experiences during their lifetime and it sort of changes their personality to some degree.

Well, there is a side-quest to turn her into a shemale.

Then you'll notice, trust me.

Hardening saves relationships, trust me on this.

Not to disagree Melrache, but I think that's a bit more of Alistair's deal. In Leliana's case the main thing seemed to be her giving up on the idea of a fuzzy peaceful nirvana in the Chantry as the be all and end all, and accepting that she's a bard. Honestly, irrespective of whether the Chantry is positive or not in the game universe, "hardening" Leliana seemed to make her stop clinging to an unrealistic conflict of identity.

(Additional changes - often the ones that people are interested in - is whether Leliana has a rogue-ish or nun-ish ending, and being open to a wider range of romance/sexual behavior; becoming a mistress if the PC marries someone else, or sleeping with the PC in combination with Zevran and/or another NPC. There are any number of "OMG how do I get the Leliana foursome" threads which could elaborate.)

Yes, well each for their own. I found it much more comfortable when I didn't get screamed at when I chose to put my task as a Grey Warden before getting kitties down from trees.

Does hardening eliminate the little 'stayed with her lover...for a time' bit in the ending?

I believe the stayed with her lover for a time bit is put in for a future expansion. Not to insinuate that you get in a horrible fight and break up, but that you aren't going to be living that peaceful life forever.

I'm aware...I was just wondering if Melrache was referring to Alistair, or if you can get a different ending with Leliana as well.

It doesn't refer to the relationship, it refers to whatever you were doing with her before you were doing something else.

For example my PC stayed with the Grey Wardens and she stayed with me, the end text said we stayed and rebuilt the grey wardens "for a time..." and then we went off to lead some expedition against Darkspawn. So it's your travels or whatever that are the for a time part.

As far as telling for sure if Leliana has been hardened, has anybody noticed if the story log tab on the online social network records it? I don't remember seeing any popups when I hardened Alistair but I noticed it recorded it for him on the story tab as "Hardened by Life" for that character profile.

I couldn't find one for her although I thought I had hardened her as well.

You don't have to get the "'stayed with her lover...for a time'" line, if you chose to stay in Denerim, help rebuild the Grey Wardens or maybe one of the other options she will stay with you. Which is kinda odd, because she said she wanted to travel and that's the one where she leaves.

Although for a time could be until our much loved Grey Warden's time is up.

I noticed that if you "hardened" Leliana and you survive the ending she’s wearing rouge clothes and if you didn’t "hardened" her she’s wearing chantry clothes.

The biggest one i noticed is the ending you get when your sacrifice yourself in the end.

If she’s hardened it says she writes a love song and is never heard of again but if she isn't hardened she does the same thing but there's a line added that says "a maid of Leliana heard her say with tears in her eyes that the maker will finally let her be with her beloved once again"

I don't know the exact word for word line but it's really close.

As for the "for a time" ending i also believe it means they ended up doing something else like a future DLC

Interesting, because I wouldn't call Lil hard at the end, she mentions how her vision truly was a miracle, but she is most certainly dressed as a bard ...

She traveled with me in my ending, nothing in there about leaving...

She becomes hardened if you convince her to kill Marjoline instead of letting her go free during her companion quest.

Alistair becomes hardened if you convince him to forget about his sister when you meet her during his companion quest.

If the above posts are true about her wearing rogue or chantry clothes, then I had her kill Marjoline, but she still ended in chantry robes. I Think it has something to do with how you respond to her views on whether or not the Maker sent her a vision.

I'm not sure if Killing Marjoline actually changes her because in all the times i finished her personal quest i always spared Marjoline. It seems to be in the conversation you have with her after that seems to change her in my games. Because when i talk to her and encourage her to be a bard and tell her that killing is who she is she seems to be "hardened" or changed and when i tell that she is a good person and because she strives to be a good person she doesn't seem to change.
But then again this is my play through and next time i do the personal quest I'll try killing Marjoline to see if it changes anything.

Strange cause she travels with me too (i ask her in the hall before the ending), 100% romance. And i have the "at least for a time" after something like she accompagned her lover in her travels. So i'm very curious what text you had : what the deal with the "at least for a time" that some player have and other seem to not have with the same ending (staying in Denerim or traveling since the only case i read that the "at least for a time" was missing was, for Leliana or Zevran, to stay with the hero to rebuild the Grey Wardens).

azncow41 is right, its the conversation after the encounter with Marjolaine that 'changes' her if you tell her that she is a bard and to accept it, rather than any of the more 'sooofteee..." (as she would call them) options.

I didn't notice that many differences in the dialogue after much other than if you spare Marjolaine, you get the option in one of the post-encounter convos to say "I told you that you should have killed her!" or words to that effect. Kind of intrigued as to whether there is any differences further on as this is my 3rd playthrough that I got round to killing Marjolaine, the first two times I let her exit (but still hardened Leliana after). Think on my 4th I'll leave her as a softeee :P

I had "unhardened" Leliana clothed in noble dress at the end as well. I suspect it depends on what you did to the dragon guarding the Sacred Urn -- i didn't kill it so there was no opportunity to Leliana to become a guardian of it. Maybe leaving Marjolaine alive has something to do with it as well, as it gives Leliana something other to focus on.
