Precisely, if these were initial stages of indoctrination and by chosing Control you'd become another Saren and by chosing Merge you'd become a TIM-esque husk (or something like that), while Destroy would actually be the "activate Crucible to do what it was suppose to do", the endings would not only be much more palatable (even if our prior choices still had no meaning) but would also make sense within the established lore... alas, that's too hopeful thinking for my pessimistic mindset, ESPECIALLY given the aweful, aweful epilogue.

Seriously though, as soon as Hackett says that Capital-class ship is coming at Shepard, first thing he/she says is "HARBINGER", yet only thing we see is pew-pew without any meaningful interaction. After so much that happened in ME2, and after so much foreshadowing about Harbinger at ME3, this is what the supposed-to-be-the-most-badass-reaper-of-all turns into? A minor reaper unit simply going on about its business? What. the. hell?
That's what I liked about Harbinger though. He didn't bother with pleasantries like taunting the enemy if it would weaken his position.
ME2? He sends a Collector ship to go blow the Normandy out of the sky. No fanfare, no warning...just warp in, blow them to hell, and warp out. Hell, he even managed to kill Shepard.
ME3, he just drops out of nowhere and blasts Hammer unit with no warning; Shepard only survived because s/he's the luckiest SOB ever to live.
Harbinger doesn't sit around gloating. He gets **** done.

I think he should have been the reaper that was taken out by the thanix missiles with him talking to you the entire time
A pair of puny missiles taking out harbringer? I'm rather certain he's just a bit too big for that.

He sure talks alot in Assumed Direction Control form though, about how much it wants the Shepard's body in ME2. I found that... really... freaky.

I thought it was implied that harbinger was the Reaper that f'd your s* up during the final run to the Beam?
I mean his eyes were yellow.
I'm 90% certain that it was him. Shepard can resist the indrocnation homever, Shepard was fried bi the Reaper laser. Also, the Reaper that blewed up your sqaud had diferent eyes and was huge.

But there *was* Harbinger. LOTS of Harbinger. The last ten minutes of the game was Harbinger trying to fool you into doing his bidding and not press the "Reapers lose" button while disguised as an innocend and well-intended extremist Deus ex Machina child.
/wishful thinking
Yes. If this will be true, Bioware will have made the best trilogy ever and will finish the story in style later.
Jesus F Christ, this would be BRILLIANT!

It all was so elegant in its simplicity and not stupid. Then they went and made it stupid by making it needlessly complex.

On that note, it seems unlike Harbinger to just get up and leave afterwards. Given his personality and obsession with Shepherd in ME2, he should have sterilized the surrounding area just to make sure.
I do wish we had more of him. And I agree that he should have been the
role of the godkid. Make him teh catalyst and you have to use his dark
energy to destroy the reapers. No need for a god kid, no dues ex
problems. The story stays the same, reapers make the relays to control
organics so machines (the reapers) can control the galaxy.

But it wasn't simple, we knew in ME2 that Reapers were transcended flesh; bio-mechanical avatars of instrumentality. We just didn't know why, the Reapers didn't only want to control the galaxy as machines, they always had one overriding purpose. We just didn't know what that purpose was till now. I believe that if Bioware only explained it earlier and more throughly instead of all in the end, the endings wouldn't have sucked as they did.

well that is easy enough to explain away. Their bound to lose a few in the fight. They want advanced life forms, their willing to lose one or two to repopulate their species.

Truthfully, I was convinced that Harbinger would be a final boss-like character in this game. I thought perhaps we would end up going inside that big squid body to see what he truly looks like in there (remember the human Reaper?) and have a chance at taking him out.
