Actually, it is already hinted in ME2 that he might not be a really faithful partner. He apparently was together with Miranda, doesn´t even remember something they promised each other (Miranda remembers her part), and he himself admits then "she deserves a better man than I am...".
So. Here you go. In ME3, he found a woman which made him a child so that he cannot run away anymore so easily. That fits his character; while he wouldn´t be a really faithful partner, he is still responsible enough to not leave a pregnant woman. Very realistic indeed, since that is not unheard of.
I enjoyed this type of romance very much, as well as the Thane variant. Both are very very emotional and show how it can go if not everything is rainbow and unicorn.
Umm... no, there were no hints to Jacob being a cheater in ME2, at all.
Miranda and Jacob had an relationship that they ended. Cheating is never mentioned at all in ME2. Unless you consider having had a previous relationship before you meet your current partner cheating, but according to that logic Miranda would have cheated on BroShep by having had a previous relationship with Jacob. No, having had a relationship earlier in your life does not make you a cheater. And it is never mentioned in the game that Jacob would have cheated on Miranda, and if indeed he had done so. Do you really think Miranda would happily work with him again? If Jacob had cheated on Miranda, he would not be working with her on the Normandy in ME2. No one ever mentions cheating.
You are correct that there is a mention of a promise, Jacob get's info on his father's crashed ship. It was Miranda who sent him that info, anonymously. If you go to that planet to get Jacob loyal, she later reveals that it was she who sent that info to Jacob. She said it was because of an old promise. And she keeps her promises. What that promise was, is never mentioned.
The "She deserves a better man than me"-line what the stupidest thing they ever wrote in that romance. It has such great convos later on, but that one line is always misunderstod. It is Jacob saying that he finds Miranda to be a bit high maintance. Wish they had worded it differently...
Jacob is almost irritatingly goody-two-shoes if you have an urge for pushing mercs out of windows and such things. During his romance he specifically says that he doesn't want to rush things, and that he wants something real. Really don't see if you got that impression of him at all. He is really a keeping-it-straight-and-narrow person in ME2.
If you had done his romance-arc in ME3 you would know that there are some really awful mixes of romance-convo and friendly convo's. A FemShep who is dumped cannot talk to Jacob to find out why he cheated on her. We can punch a reporter but there is no way to be angry at Jacob over this. You have to save your cheating bastared of an ex, and his girlfriend from that base. Even if you personally would like to leave them to rot. Do you really see a renegade FemShep going "Oki, you cheated on me with that woman. Well, I'm going to save all of you, we can have cookies and tea on the ship afterwards". I can see a renegade FemShep leaving that planet with a crater in it.
It could have been an interesting thing in the game, to play out how your FemShep reacts to Jacob cheating on her. But it is never mentioned by any of your companions. I would think that Liara would come by to tell FemShep that "Jacob wasn't good enough for her" or something to cheer her up. But no, they don't do anything with it. The whole thing is just to get Jacob out of the story as fast as possible so there won't be any romance-stuff done for him. When you go back to the hospital as a romanced and dumped FemShep to meet Jacob again. You get the same friendly-convo as everyone else. You would think a sane man would have something better to say to his ex-girlfriend who saved his life and his new girlfriend than "We're naming the baby after you". But they probably to add something so we get the same thing as any other Shepard. At that point any living breathing woman would have throttled Jacob, but that is somehow not an option.
You can perhaps look on Jacob and Thane from the outside, if you only play BroShep, and say. Nice, some things doesn't always go well for Shepard. But, if you do play FemShep, and see how little effort was put into this, you would be very dissapointed. Thane could have been the Moulin Rouge, a breathtakingly beautiful sad romance, of ME. Since they are determined to kill him off they could at least have done this in some way that let's you have a romance first. It could have been sad but beautiful. Nope, it is the same as Jacob. "Hi Hun, I'm dying/cheating on you". Exit stage. Again with a horrible mix of romance and friendly convos.
It might look good from the outside looking in. But if you tried them yourself... They are not ok, because they are not developed.
edit: Sorry if I sound angry, I'm just dissapointed at the treatment of one of my fav characters in ME.
In ME2: Jacob is the only one who says "I love you" to FemShep.
In ME2: LotSB, Liara says to FemShep that it is good that she has Jacob since he is stable and she will need that support.
In ME3: Jacob "How long was I supposed to wait"
